		According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,262 km² (2,418 mi²).
		The county was created by an act of the Nebraska Legislature in 1862.
		It shares its name with Holt County, Missouri, and is named after Joseph Holt of Kentucky, who was Postmaster General and Secretary of War under President James Buchanan.
