Jazz Standards History: Biography (Eric Maschwitz)
Under the pseudonym of Holt Marvell he and BBC producer Val Gielgud (brother of actor Sir John) wrote thrillers and adapted them for broadcasting.
He collaborated with composer George Posford on several stage shows, and At the Balalaika’s title cut was number three on the hit parade at the same time as “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” his 1940 collaboration with Jack Strachey and Manning Sherwin.
“He Wears a Pair of Silver Wings” with Michael Carr made the Hit Parade in 1942, but Maschwitz’s biggest hit (also as Holt Marvell) was “These Foolish Things” (1936) with Strachey and Harry Link.

Understanding Poetry (Brooks/Penn Warren): Marvell's Horatian Ode
To say all this is not to suggest that Marvell shed any unnecessary tears over the plight of the Irish, or even to imply that he was not happy, as one assumes most Englishmen were, to have the Irish rebellion crushed promptly and efficiently.
That seems sensible in view of the fact that we have the poem, whereas the attitude held by Marvell at any particular time must be a matter of inference, even though we grant that the poem may be put in as part of the evidence from which we are to draw inferences.
Marvell was evidently associating with the Royalist party and perhaps his "Ode" was circulating among Royalist sympathizers soon after its composition.

Understanding Poetry (Brooks/Penn Warren): Marvell's Horatian Ode
But if we do succeed in mastering the poem we shall have the poem; and we may have gained some insight into the attitude of Marvell the man. For the poem was fashioned by him.
Rather he has gone out of his way to insist that Cromwell was deaf to the complaint of Justice and its pleading of the "ancient rights." The power achieved by Cromwell is a "forced power" - a usurped power.
True, we do know that Marvell was capable of composing the "Ode" and one must concede that that very fact may tell us a great deal about Marvell's attitude toward Cromwell.

Technical - Drama and Music Mixers - Broadcasting House in 1932
Some clues about how the DCPs were used can be gleaned from the film that was made of Val Gielgud and Holt Marvell's 1934 novel 'Death at Broadcasting House'.
Holt Marvell was the pseudonym of Eric Maschwitz who was Head of Variety at the time.
There are shots of Val Gielgud at what looks to be a very accurate mock-up of a DCP as well as generally very realistic reconstructions of the productions group studios in Broadcasting House.

 Eric Maschwitz
He embarked on a writing career in the early '20s, authoring short fiction, and he worked as a ghost writer, redoing the work of less competent authors.
He joined the BBC as an executive in 1926 and also began writing operettas, usually in association with composer George Posford for radio broadcast.
Writing as Holt Marvell, he also collaborated with Gielgud on mystery novels, among them Death at Broadcasting House, which was adapted into a film in 1934.

 Val Gielgud and the BBC
It could be argued that Gielgud helped place the resonance of radio drama centrally in the most compelling and influential medium of entertainment of his day and furthermore extended this resonance to the USA where the film had a successful distribution in 1941 with not too disappointing audience figures.
Script adaptation was by Basil Mason from the original novel by Val Gielgud and Holt Marvel.
There is evidence that Val Gielgud (his middle name was Henry) collaborated with Holt Marvell (pseudonym of Eric Maschwitz} in the writing of a previous novel:

She wisely has chosen a diverse range of material, including rarely recorded songs by major talents: "June Comes Around Every Year" (Harold Arlen-Johnny Mercer), "Stay With Me" (Stephen Sondheim), and "The Siren's Song" (Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II), for a 14 track program in which to demonstrate her mellow, sonorous voice.
With a delivery that is deliciously inspired, emotion-packed and scintillating with artistic beauty, this is a marvel of a CD that retains its freshness and brilliancy with each repeated play time.
The sparkle, snap and crackle goes beyond the entertainer herself: she is abetted by ingenious orchestrator/conductor Ron Abel and a able group of 12 supporting musicians (including Abel himself on the piano) who strike up just the right balance of instrumental accentuation

A detective novel, Death at Broadcasting House, written in 1934 by Val Gielgud and Holt Marvell described it as "a Worthy Edifice well fitted to the marvels it contains", and as a "Damned Awful Erection".
