 1914 Early Reminiscences, Jackson County Historical Society
It was known as the “Holton House,” a hotel, and Thomas WATERS, its proprietor, became a prominent figure in the early history of the town.
The Methodist Episcopal church of Holton was the first organized; the next the United Brethren, after this the Christian, and in 1867 the Presbyterian.
HOLTON, for whom the town was named, offered to donate a bell to the first church built.

Holton, the Milwaukee abolitionist, whose only visit to Holton was in 1880 with his wife and son.
Holton was chosen as the county seat in 1858.

After dinner they drove out east of town, and went into camp, and here the company broke up; but it may be said that there was hardly a skirmish in the Territory but that some members of this company were engaged in it.
Holton, from the rude hamlet of two decades ago, presents in 1882 a very metropolitan aspect, and is in fact a beautiful, progressive city.

The battle of Shiloh was one of the severest of the war, and Wisconsin soldiers fought as bravely there as they have done elsewhere, although at that time they were without drill and experience.
The old companies reenlisted, and on the 6th, left Vicksburg for Wisconsin, on veteran furlough, arriving at Madison on the 16th, where they were publicly welcomed by the State authorities, and the members of the Legislature.
The Twelfth and Sixteenth Wisconsin regiments were in the same brigade in the Third Division, and on the 21st of July, were under the command of General Force.

 Holton-Elkhorn Band
Wisconsin legislation in 1858 provided that militia units of 40 or more could elect specified officers and “choose so many musicians as they deem proper.” While commissions as high as Major and Captain would be very unusual for bandmasters today, they apparently were acceptable in the middle 1800’s militia.
Murphy, bandmaster at the University of Wisconsin, Patrick Conway of the famous Conway Band and Ed Chenette, a prominent bandmaster and composer from Iowa.
Ted’s work took him out of town so often it was not practical for him to direct or play in the Holton-Elkhorn Band but he did assume management of the band and, working with Lawrence Steidl, they started the work of rebuilding so that over the years it regained a measure of its former excellence.

Fortunate it was for Wisconsin when in the very year of her birth as a territory, Increase Allen Lapham cast his lot for the remainder of his life with her.
To a practical application of the Jacksonian theory of spoils politics was due the migration of Lapham from the capital of Ohio to the new-born town of Milwaukee in the spring of 1836.
In 1843 he secured the adoption by the territorial legislature of a resolution to Congress petitioning a grant of land for the purpose of establishing in Wisconsin an institution for the instruction of the deaf and dumb, and blind, and an asylum for the insane.

This mill they constructed and fitted up on quite an extensive scale, there being a fifty-horse-power engine and two boilers, but, the various working parts proving very defective, the mill did not work well.
They at once proceeded to change the working parts and connections in the mill, putting in new and improved machinery, and adding a twenty-two inch circular saw in place of the mulay saw.
Holton's interest, becoming sole proprietor, and held possession and ran the mill as long as there was need of one in the vicinity.

 Weare Cemetery
Located in the Seeley Creek Valley in the Town of Southport, Chemung County, New York in the yard of the Donald Holmes residence at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Mountain View Drive.
My father is 77 and easily remembers this cemetery and indicates that it was not a large cemetery and he cut corn in the field next to the cemetery.
When Fanny Gale died in 1880 her death is recorded in the Elmira City Death Records and reads "buried Town of Southport, Private Grounds." This would indicate to me that this was probably only ever a family cemetery.

On Dec. 11, 1917, he was appointed to command the 32nd or "Red Arrow" Division, comprised largely of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan, and on Dec. 17, 1917, he was advanced to major general.
