This mountain side is really the eastern slope of the great Sawatch uplift, or, as it is frequently called, the Holy Cross Mountains, which lie west of the railroad.
The mountain slope on the other side of the valley is composed mainly of rocks that overlie the quartzite, and if a trench were cut from the top to the bottom of the slope the rocks would appear as shown in the figure.

Holy Cross Ridge or UN13,831 is the highpoint on a long and beautiful ridge running south-southwest from the great Mount of the Holy Cross (14,005-ft.) The ridge harbors four 13,500+-ft summits including the fourteener Mount of the Holy Cross, the Cenntenial Thirteener Point 13,831-ft, and lesser known Point 13,768-ft and Point 13,618-ft.
The Holy Cross Ridge resides in the northern mountains of the Sawatch Range, extending from the summit of Mount of the Holy Cross south for 4.1 miles to 12,380-ft Fancy Pass.
This ridge separates the vast Cross Creek Drainage to the west, from a series of smaller lake-ridden areas to the east.

The mountain range is transected by the narrow gorge of the Dunajec River.
It refers to an area south of the Carpathian Mountains which was until 1938 the easternmost part of Czechoslovakia, then became part of Hungary and since 1945 is part of the Ukraine.

(Holy Cross Ridge runs north-south, with a "smooth" west side and numerous east-west ridges and cirques on its east side.) It might be slightly easier to stay as far right (east) as possible on this ascent and hit the ridge near 13300ft, but it's pretty much a Hobson's choice.
Because the trailhead for the standard route up Holy Cross is at the same parking area, I could consider doing a traverse and descend that standard route.
The views of Holy Cross from this switchbacking trail are fabulous where the tree cover is thin.
