Holy Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Holy Fire (Greek 'Αγιο Φως, "Holy Light") is believed by Orthodox Christians to be a miracle that occurs every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, the day preceding Orthodox Easter.
It is also claimed that in 1579, the Armenian patriarch prayed day and night in order to obtain the holy fire, but the lightning miraculously struck a column near the entrance and lit a candle held by the Orthodox patriarch standing nearby.

On Easter Saturday the "Holy Fire" is said to appear miraculously within it, and candles lit from this wondrous confirmation of Christ's divinity are, by ancient tradition, passed among the faithful by Jerusalem's Greek Orthodox Patriarch and one of the church's Armenian Orthodox priests.
Some of the stories are dreadful: the Holy Fire ceremony of 1834 ended with a stampede, mass suffocation and a massacre by panicky Ottoman troops; a British observer described the church walls "spattered with the blood and brains of those who had been felled, like oxen, with the butt-ends of the soldiers' bayonets".
Holy Fire successfully demonstrates that nothing relating to Jerusalem is ever simple; and I suspect that the author has a sense that she may have overstepped the mark here, because she plunges immediately back into the West Jerusalem restaurant where her two friends are finishing up their meal.

Truly for us, holy and worthy of all solemn triumph is this redeeming and radiantly effulgent night, the harbinger of the bright- beaming Day of the Resurrection on which Light eternal shone forth in the flesh from the grave for all.

After recieving the Holy Fire, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch passes the flame to the Armenian and Coptic metropolitans, who hand it on to the remaining communities and they in turn, spread it to their own people.
The Patriarch then passes the fire to the Armenian and Coptic metropolitans, who in turn pass it through holes in the walls of the tomb chapel to runners who are ready to carry it swiftly to the various denominations in the church.

Bantam Spectra, October 1996, $22.95 US My main book for the last week has been Holy Fire, by Bruce Sterling.
Holy Fire is set 100 years in the future, and the main character is a woman born in 2001 (a symbolic date, I'm sure; as the fact that the book opens with the death of her former lover, born in 1999, is symbolic too).
She seems to be whatever the plot needs her to be at certain times: this is partly explainable by the very real physical and psychological changes she must be undergoing: but at times it seems rather arbitrary.
