The Authority of The Holy Scriptures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Irenaeus was the first to establish that, in addition to the Canon of Holy Scripture, a creed and an apostolic episcopacy were required for the Church to be considered "Orthodox." The creed represented the theological debate on the the apostolic tradition as it had developed in the post-apostolic era.
The apostolic faith, as expressed in the Scriptures and the creed, needed an apostolic episcopacy to ensure it's proper transmission, and thus the authority of the bishop -- which developed from the authority of the original apostles -- was established as a safeguard for the faith.
It is important to note that Scripture is "primary," that tradition is authoritative only to the degree in which it is "faithful" to the biblical witness, and that experience and reason are the "lived" aspect of Scripture and tradition; experience is not detached from the Holy Scriptures, but must be directly related to them.

The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod - Of the Holy Scriptures
Since the Holy Scriptures are the Word of God, it goes without saying that they contain no errors or contradictions, but that they are in all their parts and words the infallible truth, also in those parts which treat of historical, geographical, and other secular matters, John 10:35.
We furthermore teach regarding the Holy Scriptures that they are given by God to the Christian Church for the foundation of faith, Eph.
Hence the Holy Scriptures are the sole source from which all doctrines proclaimed in the Christian Church must be taken and therefore, too, the sole rule and norm by which all teachers and doctrines must be examined and judged.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Scripture
It fails to establish that certain portions of Scripture are inspired writings, e.g., the genealogical tables, and the summary accounts of the kings of Juda, while it favours the inspiration of several post-Apostolic works, e.g., of the "Imitation of Christ", and of the "Epistles" of St. Ignatius Martyr.
Since Scripture is the written word of God, its contents are Divinely guaranteed truths, revealed either in the strict or the wider sense of the word.
While the private handling of Scripture is opposed to the fact that it is common property, its administrators are bound to communicate its contents to all the members of the Church.

 The Holy Scriptures
Once the Scriptures were written, someone had to determine whether or not they were divinely inspired and thus qualified to be considered as sacred Scripture.
It is remarkable to anyone who studies them how Scriptures written over a period of at least 1,200 years by a large number of diverse authors in several languages all bear witness fundamentally to the same understanding of the nature of God.
He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones to execute judgement upon all, and to destroy all the ungodly: And to convict all flesh of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.

 Concerning the Holy Scriptures
I believe that all the Scriptures are inspired by God and that, as St. John Chrysostom says, "It is impossible for a man to be saved if he does not read the Scriptures." However, the Holy Scriptures cannot be dissociated from the Church, for She wrote them.
The Holy Scriptures lose their meaning, the sense of their expression and their content for the man who is a stranger to the Church, to Her life, to Her Mysteries and to Her Traditions, since they were not written for him.
Therefore, the Holy Scriptures themselves are a part of Holy Tradition which is a unified whole and we must accept it as a whole, and not choose bits and parts according to our private opinions or interpretations.

Holy Scripture (or Sacred Scripture, meaning the Holy Writings) is a term of reverence used by Christians when referring to the Bible.
The older branches of Christianity accept the idea that metaphor and poetry are an integral part of their composition; certain traditions, however, especially in Protestantism, consider these writings to be factually accurate, and thus inerrant (see Fundamentalist Christianity).
