 Holy Smoke
Holy Smoke is the kind of movie that makes a person shake their head in bewilderment.
Even when the film begins to degenerate, their performances are still able to make Holy Smoke look better than it actually is. There are also some funny moments in the film, mostly dealing with Barron's family, and unintentionally funny moments that arise from the use of special effects.
Kate Winslet (Titanic, Hideous Kinky) is still able to carefully pick her jobs, Harvey Keitel (Smoke, Copland) is once again naked, and it is directed by Jane Campion (The Piano, Portrait of a Lady), and co-written by Campion and her sister Anna, who wrote the novel.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Language (Holy Smoke)
Though the wispy beacon arising from the Sistine Chapel was both holy and smoke, this ancient mode of announcing a new Pope isn't the source of the idiom.
The exclamation 'Holy smoke' derives from the burning of the ballots used to elect a Pope.
In that year, Rudyard Kipling and his American agent Charles Balestier used it as an independent vehemence in "The Naulahka:" 'By the holy smoke, some one has got to urge girls to stand by the old machine.' From that point forward, 'holy smoke' began appearing in the literature of the day as a generic exclamation.

Her Portrait of a Lady was not well-received, and the reaction to Holy Smoke is almost guaranteed to dull whatever luster remains on her reputation.
Holy Smoke is one of those movies that takes some potentially fascinating ideas and shipwrecks them by poor execution and even worse writing.
Some have suggested that Campion's aim with Holy Smoke was not to offer a serious psychological study of a cult deprogramming, but to present a thinly-veiled satire.

 AboutFilm.Com - Holy Smoke! (1999)
Holy Smoke is an exercise best left to the most ardent of Kate Winslet worshippers, who will likely be so enraptured by their heroine, they won't realize how little sense the movie makes, or they just won't care.
The main reason to endure Holy Smoke, though, is the gorgeous photography of India, of the Outback, and most especially, of the lushly exquisite Kate Winslet.
Unlike her first film, Sweetie (which Holy Smoke emulates in its desperately giddy tone and colorful, hyper-real style more than the more subdued Campion films, The Piano and Portrait of a Lady), the strong-willed heroine's confusion doesn't drive the story--and neither does much else.

 Holy Smoke - Tonino Benacquista
Holy Smoke is likeable enough, and Polsinelli an agreeable narrator, never quite sure what he's in for (except for that disagreeable section where he keeps the readers in the dark), but Benacquista doesn't get either the tone or pacing down right.
In the end, Holy Smoke is an agreeable little thriller, but doesn't quite live up to the potential of the story.
The central idea -- what happens at the vineyard that makes it so desirable -- is inspired and nicely pulled off, but it takes Benacquista quite a while to get to it, and there are a few too many distractions surrounding it, packed into very little space.

 Questions & Answers: Holy smoke
It seems more likely that holy smoke was invented anew as a mock-religious exclamation and mild oath on the model of the older holy Moses (from the 1850s), and holy terror and Holy Joe (both from the 1880s).
What is certain is that it has nothing to do with the puffs of smoke that appear during the election of a new Pope.
There are several such references in the Bible, including the Book of Revelation: “And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand”.

The filmmakers can't help themselves Holy Smoke, directed by Jane Campion, written by Jane and Anna Campion
Holy Smoke takes up themes addressed in director Jane Campion's four previous feature films: principally, the relationship between the sexes and the problems faced by women who are considered—by themselves and/or Campion—to be at odds with or standing apart from society.
It's simply nonsense to suggest that Holy Smoke conveys “a compelling symmetry between her two main protagonists,” as the production notes elsewhere assert.
Aside from the rather unpleasant self-aggrandizing going on here (we certainly needed to know that Jane Campion sees herself as an “explorer” and is attracted to other “explorers”!), this description of the film's internal logic is so desperately off the mark as to make one groan.

When "Holy Smoke" premiered as a movie at the Venice Film Festival in summer 1999, the Italian press praised it as a "balanced" approach to the brainwashing/deprogramming controversy.
The Campion sisters now offer to us a book version (Holy Smoke: A Novel, New York: Hyperion, 1999), whose success will probably be chain-connected to the movie's.
The novel is of considerable interest, however, for understanding the Campions' approach to deprogramming.

Her new film, Holy Smoke, is poised between farce and sexual melodrama: Strindberg's "Miss Julie" with pratfalls.
It's a compendium of all of Campion's worst impulses as a filmmaker: dubious music (tourists ecstatically dancing to, of all things, Neil Diamond's "Holly Holy"), turgid pace, pointless slow motion shots so "artful" in their beauty that they stop the film dead in its tracks.
Worse yet, her fanatical attention to surface detail (you can all but smell Hunter's unwashed hair in The Piano) gets lost when it matters most: when Hunter sits at her piano, we hear the tinkly new age air pudding of Michael Nyman rather than something a nineteenth century pianist might conceivably play.

Taken on its own merits, though, Smoke is quite a strong release, avoiding any cloning of Deep or "Cuts You Up" in favor of a different approach meant to bring out the band's live power more directly.
Hopes for another surprise American success from Peter Murphy with Deep's follow-up went unfulfilled, as success proved not to be the case; released in the initial craze of the grunge/alternative mega-crossover, Smoke's elegant ballads and angular, arty rockers simply didn't fit in.
Producer Mike Thorne gets some great performances out of them and Murphy both, giving the album a crisp, solid punch throughout, even during its quieter moments.
