He was active in the Ukrainian Orthodox community in Saskatoon, we he attended Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, as a member of the Cathedral Choir, and as a member of CYMK (Ukrainian Orthodox Youth).
On August 18th, 1973 he was ordained into the Holy Diaconate at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Saskatoon by Archbishop Boris, and on the August 25th, 1974 in Holy Tranfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton, Deacon John was ordained to the Priesthood, again ordained by Archbishop Boris.
Following the repose of Metropolitan Wasyly in 2005, Archbishop John became the acting Primate, and at the 21st Sobor in Winnipeg in 2006 was elected Primate, and Metropolitan (and was approved by Constantinople on November 20th, 2005).

One of the highlights of her ministry at the Cathedral surely was the thrilling performance she gave of the Poulenc Organ Concerto on the newly restored Reuter (in fact, she really only had a few days on the instrument prior to the inaugural concert!).
Most recently, she has performed on the recital series at the Cathedral of St. Phillip in Atlanta, Georgia, and has been a featured performer for the inauguration of two landmark instruments: the new Reuter organ at the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque, and the new Casavant Freres organ at Piedmont College, Georgia.

On July 16, 1978, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Saskatoon at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Winnipeg by Metropolitan Andrew, Archbishop Boris, and Bishop Mykolaj.
Then in 1985, the 17th Sobor of the UOCC selected Wasyly to be its Metropolitan and Primate with the honorific "His Beatitude," and he will be the last Hierarch to hold that title in the UOCC, as decided by His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholemew I.
Metropolitan Wasyly reposed on January 10, 2005, and his funeral took place on January 21-22 at Holy Trinity Metropolitan Cathedral in Winnipeg.

The history of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral congregation may be traced to December 7, 1945 when a group desiring to form a new parish in north Winnipeg met at St. Andrew's College.
In accordance with the decisions of the General Sobor held in Saskatoon in 1946 and the one held in Winnipeg in 1951, this parish was assigned the Cathedral Parish of the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church of Canada, and its fixed assets became the property of the Church as a whole.
The Cathedral was officially opened and consecrated on July 8, 1962 by the Primate of the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church of Canada, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Ilarion.

 Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada convenes 20th Sobor in Winnipeg (07/30/00)
Vespers were held each night at a temporary chapel off the main meeting room, and the Sobor culminated with a hierarchical divine liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in North End Winnipeg, followed by a youth rally in a park opposite the offices of the UOCC Consistory.
The Sobor was preceded by a two-day conference of the clergy, a day-long meeting of clergy wives, as well as a national conference of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada.
An exhibition of icons, embracing the work of four Ukrainian Canadian iconographers, was displayed at the Ukrainian Women's Association Museum at Holy Trinity Church, having previously been mounted in Toronto and Saskatoon.

To finish St. James’ Cathedral’s year-long Bach 2000 celebrations, a program honouring the great master and recreating some of the music that might have been heard at Sunday Vespers at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig just after death took him at age 65 on July 28th, 1750.
A recreation for CBC Radio's Arts National, using period instruments and traditional Gregorian chant, of the instrumental and vocal music from a High Mass in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, as it might have been heard at the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice at the end of the 16th century.
The Bells were eventually installed in 1997, and dedicated during a visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second.

The impact of His Beatitude’s service to the church as priest and hierarch will be evaluated for many years, yet the history of the UOCC has come to be embodied in the person and long life of Metropolitan Wasyly.
Following the interment, a memorial luncheon will be held at the Holy Trinity Auditorium, 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, Canada.
