Holy Orders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A controversy in the Catholic church over the question of whether Anglican holy orders are valid was dogmatically settled by Pope Leo XIII in 1896, who wrote that Anglican orders lack validity because the rite by which priests are ordained is not correctly performed.
Holy Orders in the modern Roman Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, Old Catholic, and Independent Catholic Churches, includes three degrees: bishop, priest, and deacon.
Eastern Orthodox bishops can, and frequently do, grant recognition to the holy orders of converts who were earlier ordained in the Roman Catholic church (though there is much debate in the Orthodox Church about this); that is part of the policy called church economy.

 Holy Orders
Holy Orders are the several different degrees of ordained ministries recognized by the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches.
Holy orders, like baptism and confirmation, are considered to have character; that is, the power conferred at ordination is regarded as permanent.
The minor orders are not usually included in the term "holy orders," for they really refer to laymen set apart for special tasks rather than to clergy in the proper sense of the term.

Our Catholic Faith - Sacrament Of Holy Orders
Holy Scripture attributed the power to the Apostles and their successors (Acts, vi, 6; xvi, 22; I Tim., v, 22; II Tim., i, 6; Tit., i, 5), and the Fathers and councils ascribe the power to the bishop exclusively.
For admission to minor orders, the testimony from the parish priest or from the master of the school where the candidate was educated--generally, therefore, the superior of the seminary--is required.
The Pontifical directs that ordinations to sacred orders must be held publicly in the cathedral church in presence of the cathedral chapter, or if they be held in some other place, the clergy should be present and the principle church, as far as possible, must be made use of (cf.

The historical development of these orders was not the same throughout the Church and, moreover, their functions underwent considerable modifications according to the exigencies of the times.
These four orders are called minor orders because of their lesser importance and dignity when compared to major orders; they are not sacraments.

 Holy Orders
The sacrament of holy orders is conferred in three ranks: bishops, priests, and deacons.
Let all such practices be utterly done away, and let the deacons remain within their own bounds, knowing that they are the ministers of the bishop and the inferiors of the presbyters.
Bishops (episcopoi) are those who have care of multiple congregations and have the task of appointing, ordaining, and disciplining priests and deacons.

 EIPS - Holy Orders
HOLY ORDERS is an expression altogether unknown to the Sacred Scriptures, and the thing it represents would have been not less a novelty to the Apostles themselves and their disciples.
The Council of Trent, however, nothing daunted, declares that by " Holy Ordination, bestowed by words and external signs, grace is conferred, and that none ought to doubt that Orders constitute one of the Seven Sacraments of the Holy Church." These conclusions are, as usual, fortified by anathema.
On the subject of Holy Orders, as on every other, our watchword must be to the law and to the testimony.

Catholic Update - Sacrament of Holy Orders by Thomas Richstatter, O.F.M., Th.D.
"Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church....It includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate" (Catechism #1536).
To understand what is happening to the Sacrament of Holy Orders today I suggest that we first look at the changes we Catholics have experienced in the other sacraments—especially the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Reconciliation.
The tension between being set apart and living in the midst is perhaps a reflection of the tension between the Sacraments of Holy Orders and Baptism.

 orders, holy on Encyclopedia.com
In 1972 tonsure, minor orders, and subdiaconate were abolished, and a rite of admission to candidacy to the diaconate and priesthood took their place.
From the late Middle Ages, the minor orders and the major orders of subdiaconate and diaconate were largely ceremonial, considered steps to priestly ordination, and were taken by those who intended to be ordained to the priesthood.
In 1967 the diaconate was restored as an independent order with its own ministry (e.g., preaching, baptizing, distributing Holy Communion), and married men began to be received into this order.

 Holy Orders (letter)
The ordination of women touches the essence of the sacrament of Holy Orders, meaning it is a matter of sacramental theology, which the Church has no authority to change, even if she wanted to.
This must be the reason why the Holy Father has forbidden Catholics to continue to discuss the issue of women's ordination.
Allowing a married priesthood is a matter of changing Canon Law which the Church has authority to do.
