The Stranger - Film - Games - The Clunky Hombre
My man in Red Dead Revolver was named Stan, and Stan took a lot of abuse--shots to the head, troubles with dynamite, etc. --which, combined with my hassles with aiming and the constant reloading of my six-shooter, exposed another flaw in the game: Stan was a ridiculously tough hombre.
Every third-person shooter is built upon hordes of enemies, and the less precise control you have over your gunman the more the poor bastard is going to be pummeled.
My man Stan could take 10 to 20 shots; his villains could take five to six--both numbers are too high, and they steal from the enjoyment of the game.

5/13/04: Not Even Nominated Part Eleven
Ritt's films were marked by their unusually sparse scores (The Outrage, Hombre, Norma Rae), and even his two previous collaborations with John Williams, Pete 'n' Tillie and Conrack, had atypically brief scores from the composer.
Film music fans were predictably outraged when Jerry Goldsmith was passed over for the troubled Chinatown sequel, THE TWO JAKES, and Van Dyke Parks' score was an awkward fit, though the composer had a colorful cameo as an attorney.
Though the film was a stylish failure, JOE VS. THE VOLCANO featured a typically elegant and delightful score from George Delerue, including an original song, "Marooned Without You," with lyrics by the film's writer-director John Patrick Shanley.

I've been a disciplined writer ever since." After several more years, several works in the crime genre, and the success of the Paul Newman film of Leonard's Hombre, he finally quit his day job.
Quentin Tarantino was arrested for shoplifting a copy of Leonard's novel The Switch from a K-Mart in 1979, and years later filmed one Leonard novel (Rum Punch, re-titled Jackie Brown) and has optioned four more.
Elmore Leonard is the author of trailblazing Westerns and hard-boiled crime novels, the kind of fiction that keeps readers turning pages late in the night, eager to see what happens next.

dOc DVD Review: Mean Mother (1974)
Using screenwriter Charles Johnson, who wrote Fred Williamson's Hammer, Adamson and Sherman concocted a way to add freshly shot footage, using original El Hombre Que Vino Del Odio cast member Dennis Safren as a connective link, to create a racially edgy film with a shady, violent black lead, with a supposedly international feel.
The scenes where Safren has "crossed over" from the old film to the new stuff is handled pretty well, from a technical standpoint, but the stories never seem to really feel connected.
To make things even more surreal, historically, Clifton Brown was cast to play the film's lead character Beauregard Jones.

 HOMBRE - DVD
Newman was the quintessential anti-hero for a dissenting cinematic age, and he brought that brooding outcast sensibility to what was perhaps the quintessential outsider role: a half-breed in a western in Ritt's 1967 film Hombre.
Arguably the biggest and best star of the sixties, Paul Newman's Hombre is his fourth and final "H" film of that decade--a quartet that includes The Hustler, Harper, and another of his six collaborations with Martin Ritt, the fantastic Hud.
This is not to say that Russell is a "good guy." Rather, "hombre" is deeply ambivalent and possibly vengeful, wearing the racial injustice of his mother's people on his sleeve.
