NFL Betting - Home Field Advantage in NFL Betting
Home field advantage in NFL betting is something that every handicapper and oddsmaker takes into consideration as they look at the NFL betting line.
Home field advantage is not always the same in NFL betting.
In addition to home field advantage in NFL betting not being the same for each team, it is also not the same throughout the season.

The Value of Home Field Advantage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
For the first 12 weeks of the season the average value of the home field advantage was 1.3 points.
The proper impact of home field in a given week could range anywhere from 1.5 points to as many as 5, according to the bookmakers at Bodog.
It's also worth noting that the historical trend of the home field advantage is that the impact is decreasing, likely due in large part to the easier travel and the shorter home stands that teams face.

 Testosterone Ups Home Field Advantage
June 21, 2006 -- The "home field advantage" might be partly fueled by testosterone and a basic human impulse to guard your territory.
That is, players may have tapped into a primal instinct to defend their own territory during home games.
Of course, the home field advantage is still just an advantage, not a guarantee of victory.

Home Field Advantage Athletics Campaign | Giving to Hartford
The University's "Home Field Advantage" Campaign is underway with the construction of facilities that are critical to the success of the university's Division I athletics program.
Construction on phase I involved the renovation of an existing soccer and lacrosse field (Al-Marzook Field), the relocation and construction of a softball field, and the construction of a baseball field.
The University broke ground on the HFA project in April 2005, and by the fall of 2005, soccer games were being played on the renovated artificial turf al-marzook field.

For example, I assumed that the teams are evenly matched except for home field advantage, but if one team is better than the other, that increases the chance of a four game Series.
When the trailing team was playing at home, they won 21 out of 28 game sixes, which is way more than you would expect from home field advantage.
Another factor worthy of consideration in the results of games 6 and 7: perhaps home field is more likely to decide the result when the teams are closely matched than when they are not.

 NFL home field advantage research
Essentially the home field advantage seems to be over-stated when people claim it's worth a generic 2.5 or 3 points, since from week one to week twelve the average is 1.3 points, and then from week 13 on it averaged a whopping 5.3 points!
Likewise using the 'home versus spread' sums instead of the 'home minus away' score average, shows that the smoothed effect has the away sides on top from week one to twelve, and then the home sides coming home strong down the stretch.
At a first glance though, the wise men may elect to use a variable Home Field Advantage adjustment to their predicted scores, based on the time of year that a game takes place.

Fresno State students attending home games at Bulldog Stadium are now relegated to sitting in the designated student section behind the goalpost in the south end zone.
Although the new seating arrangement should have a tremendous impact by providing more donations to the scholarship fund, it is the students who unfortunately suffer the most from the move.
While it is naive to think that there won’t still be a large number of fans who enter the stadium already intoxicated due to tailgating and other activities, the alcohol-free environment inside should allow most to regain their sobriety and eliminate many of the past security problems.

Earlier this year I read on a college football blog (or was it a message board?) that home field mattered a lot, "especially in conference games." There's not a lot of unambiguous evidence that it really does if the teams are evenly matched, as I conjectured about this time last year.
It is true that over time the home team wins about 60% of the time in almost all division 1 sports, but before you draw any conclusions from that you have to take into account that the correlation may be to be something other than the game location.
The overall home winning percentage is pretty close to the 60 percent usually cited, and the overall "home field advantage" pretty close to the 3 points many use.
