The book is "Minnesota Goes to War: The Home Front During World War II," by Dave Kenney (Minnesota Historical Society Press, $29.95) and it brought back all manner of memories to this almost-septuagenarian.
Kenney covers the entire gamut of home front efforts during wartime, from Boy Scout paper drives, buying war bonds, victory gardens, prisoner-of-war labor camps to evoke memories of a time when a nation united against a common enemy at home and abroad.
It's too bad he didn't spend more time with books about Minnesota in war time; I think particularly of Samuel Hynes's acclaimed "The Growing Seasons," which was short listed last year for a Minnesota Book Award in autobiography.
