	Allied Nations Issue, 1943
		The appearance of the Allied Nations stamp, and my own appearance, coincided with the opening day of the famous Casablanca Conference in Morocco, where Allied leaders hammered out the strategy that called for the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers.
		The "United Nations" that this stamp commemorates had nothing to do with the United Nations organization that was established in 1945, but was only the expression of a common goal -- the defeat of Germany, Japan, and Italy.
		Although many thousands of soldiers and civilians would still suffer and die, for all intents and purposes the end of the war was in sight: Germany, Italy, and Japan could not possibly withstand the coming assault from the Allied forces.

		According to this usage, allies become allies not when concluding an alliance treaty but when struck by war.
		In addition, it is usually used in a strict dichotomy of them vs. us, reflecting wartime propaganda, with no account taken of nuances of countries that were occupied as neutrals, changed sides or participated in concurrent wars.
		In general English usage, a formal treaty is not required for being perceived as an ally - co-belligerence, to fight alongside someone, is enough.
