Ecology: Energetic constraints and the relationship between body size and home range area in mammals
The very largest geographic ranges are limited by the size of the North American continent, and the smallest geographic ranges are constrained by the energetic requirements of small body size.
Home range size varies with body size and is influenced by energetic requirements (McNab 1963, Harestad and Bunnell 1979, Lindstedt et al.
Their data were taken from a variety of sources and included home range areas based on direct observation, radiotelemetry, and trapping.

Roosevelt, Theodore. 1896. Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail: III. The Home Range
If the men do not go horse-hunting they may ride off over the range; for there is generally some work to be done among the cattle, such as driving in and branding calves that have been overlooked by the round-up, or getting some animal out of a bog-hole.
For a stretch of nearly ten miles along the Little Missouri above my range, and where it passes through it, there are but three or four places where it is possible for a horseman to get out to the eastern prairie through the exceedingly broken country lying back from the river.
Then deer-saddles and elk-haunches hang from the trees near the house; and one can have good sport right on the sand of the river-bed, for we always keep shot-gun or rifle at hand, to be ready for any prairie chickens, or for such of the passing water-fowl as light in the river near us.

Home on the Range: Methods for estimating home range for bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Home range is defined as the area habitually used by an animal.
In previous attempts to quantify home ranges of bottlenose dolphins, researchers have used linear distances traveled, minimum area polygons, or simply used their study area to define home range size.
Therefore, estimates of home range size based on a small number of sightings may be biased and imprecise.

 PW: Home Range 9
With the arrival of white settlers, the available home range of the ancient Washoe was reduced, forcing them to either expand their existing home range, or modify their way of life to accommodate the changing environment around them.
The activity explores how the ancient Washoe home range could support only a limited number of human beings and how, as these available lands were reduced in size as a result of white settlement, the traditional Washoe way of life was changed to adapt to this reduction.
In human terms, a person's home range is similar to the "neighborhood", while a person's territory would be analogous to their individual house.

The traditional models used to characterize animal home ranges have no mechanistic basis underlying their descriptions of space use, and as a result, the analysis of animal home ranges has primarily been a descriptive endeavor.
In this paper, the authors characterize coyote (Canis latrans) home range patterns using partial differential equations for expected space use that are formally derived from underlying descriptions of individual movement behavior.
The results provide empirical support for a model formulation of movement response to scent marks, and suggest that having relocation data for individuals in adjacent groups is necessary to capture the spatial arrangement of home range boundaries.

The home range of an American fl bear can vary greatly depending on the location, the season, food availability, the density of individuals, and the sex and age of the individual in question.
The home range of a male is normally larger than that of a female, and each male's home range will usually overlap the home ranges of several females.
Generally, the poorer the habitat, the larger the home range must be in order to supply the bear with enough food, water, and shelter.

Kernel methods for estimating home range are increasing in popularity, but the effect of sample size on their accuracy is not known.
I used computer simulations of 10 to 200 points per home range, and compared the accuracy of home range estimates produced by fixed and adaptive kernels, using the "reference" and least squares cross validation (LSCV) methods for determining the amount of smoothing.
I used two measures to assess the accuracy of kernel home range estimates: 1) the size of the 95% home range area; and 2) the relative mean squared error of the surface fit.

"Home on the Range," Disney's new animated feature, has the genial friendliness of a 1940s singing cowboy movie, and the plot could have been borrowed from Hopalong Cassidy or Roy Rogers, apart from the slight detail that they aren't cows.
Gene Autry and Roy Rogers always had time to relax next to a campfire and sing a tune, but "Home on the Range" jumps with the energy of a cartoon short subject.
But "Home on the Range" doesn't have the crossover quality of the great Disney films like "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." And it doesn't have the freshness and originality of a more traditional movie like "Lilo & Stitch." Its real future, I suspect, lies in home video.

Home Range Estimators   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
One of the many challenges is determining not only which home range estimators to use, but also which home range package will best fulfil study objectives.
We found large differences in calculated home range sizes using Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP), Harmonic Mean (H), and Kernel (K) estimators at 3 levels of resolution (95%, 75%, and 50% of locations).
Comparing home ranges of animals among different research studies can be misleading unless researchers report the software package used, which home range estimators have been calculated, user-selected options for calculating each estimator, and the input values of required parameters.
