I find there are two reasons for not doing school work, excluding of course the obvious, which we interpret to be bad attitude, laziness etc. I believe that children actually crave to learn, but their need to display their agency and fight anyone "making" them do something they don’t feel like doing can be overwhelming.
Unit studies are both a fun and frugal way to home school your children.
I love to home school but there are days that I want to march all these kids over to the elementary school and hand them over to the principal.

They are doing great, and while they've occasionally wished they were in public school for some reason, this doesn't happen any more frequently than some of their friends indicate they wish they were home schooled.
For the 1999-2000 school year, Esther attended a private school (Hilltop) for her algebra and biology, and went to the same Spanish tutor she had used for a while.
In Texas it's treated as private schooling, which means that the state and local governments have to pretty much stay out of it.
