  HOMERS ILIAD
With the Achaeans came their gods and their oral tradition, including the Iliad and the Odyssey, which were both written down in Greek around 750 BC long after the events they depict.
The transfer of place-names naturally led to the belief over time that the events described in the epics took place in Greece and the Mediterranean and that the Achaeans were Greeks.
In this way, the origin of the Trojans and Achaeans was forgotten and the real story behind Homers Iliad and the Odyssey was lost.

  Author
It is widely believed that Homer was the author for the great epic poems concerning The Trojan Wars, The Iliad and The Odyssey.
Although nothing concrete is known about Homer, certain assumptions can be made from the style of his work and his origin can be narrowed down to the western coast of Asia Minor, now Turkey, and the offshore islands.
Another assumption is that Homer was blind, based on the portrayal of Demodocus, the blind minstrel in the Odyssey, who performs a poem about the fall of Troy.

Secondly, in Homer's Odyssey he doesn't even start the suicide, whereas in HGHF we have to suffer the whole tasteless scene of Homer looking several hundred feet down from the building and seemingly plummeting to his death, until in typical Scully fashion we have Otto bungee-jumping out of nowhere to rescue him.
Homer's suicide attempt in Homer's Odyssey is bad, but the rest of the episode isn't a complete waste of time.
Homer's Odyssey easily is the best one for me. It's not a brilliant episode, but it is underrated and at least in this one Homer's attempts at suicide are very well justified.

 Study Guide for Homer's Odyssey
Robert Fagles, the translator of the edition of the Odyssey we are reading and Professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton, will be coming to Lafayette in early September to read from his translation and discuss the problems of translating Homer into modern American English.
As Robert Fagles points out, one of Homer’s real strengths is the "simplicity, speed, and directness" of his narrative, and Fagles has captured this in his translation of the Odyssey.
Homer’s epics originally existed only in oral form (before the Greeks adopted their alphabet from the Phoenicians), and these repeated phrases allowed the performers who recited the stories to improvise their narratives using a traditional set of phrases to describe each character, object, or situation.

 Notes on Homer's Odyssey
Although one motive for Homer's use of epithets was prompted by the oral situation of needing to stall for time while he (or another epic bard or reciter) was recalling what to recite next, what makes Homer's language of enduring literary worth is that it is meaningful or significant in itself and in its context.
