 "The Day--and Night--of the Locust"
Although Nathanael West wrote it nearly 60 years ago, "The Day of the Locust" plainly is about the events we witnessed on Friday evening.
Indeed, the similarities are so great that the telecast should have been called "The Night of the Locust." For one thing, both the novel and the "real" drama feature important characters named Simpson.
It was those crowds of spectators that gave anyone familiar with "The Day of the Locust" an eerie feeling of déjà vu.

In The Day of the Locust, set designer Tod Hackett has entered the world of Hollywood, where nothing is real, where even everyday clothes consist of personality-altering costumes ("the man in the Norfolk jacket and Tyrolean hat was returning, not from a mountain, but an insurance office").

There may have been hundreds of lyric poets in Homer's day, who performed hundreds of versions of the epics, but only one of these was committed to writing and survived to this day.

 The Day of the Locust
Homer Simpson stands out in The Day of the Locust because he does not fit easily into the categories that Tod has created—Homer is certainly not a performer, like Faye or Harry, but he is not a member of the crowds that Tod hopes to paint either.
Early in the novel, Tod judges that Homer is not quite one of the "starers," as Homer is shy instead of bitter.
Yet, as the novel continues and Homer gives up his hope of sealing himself off from the world—away from sexual women especially—his shyness and meekness become instruments of a new bitterness.

But Sutherland's special genius lies in his ability to plumb the depths of our behaviour and make us care, whether he is playing a foppish Casanova or the duped, starstruck Homer Simpson of The Day of the Locust.
He had to "stand in line" for his part in Bertolucci's 1900 and he personally contacted Schlesinger to ask for the role of Homer Simpson in The Day of the Locust.
But there is a downside to this flexible approach to directors: Sutherland has not built up a consistent image, and in Hollywood, where his name has been conspicuously absent at Oscar nominations, that can be seen as a lack of commercial consistency.

Day of the Locust is a case study of Hollywood.
Then there's Homer Simpson - the original and perhaps inspiration for Matt Groening's hopelessly awkward representation of the dysfunction of the American Dream - a man whose sexual appetite is uncomfortably repressed and whose hands are the underbelly of that repression.
Perhaps fame would have disturbed him, as his novels - Day of the Locust and Miss Lonelyhearts being the two, of his four, that I have read - seem a crooked-line attack on the American Dream.

The Simpsons: Lisa the Iconoclast - TV Tome
Lisa claims there's no mention of Jebediah Springfield in history prior to 1795, yet on "Whacking Day" (my favorite episode) there is history that he was in the Battle of Ticonderoga and he started Whacking Day (supposedly on the same day).
On when Jebediah's existence is recorded: Being that Jebediah is surrounded in myth, so may be the creation of Whacking Day and his part in it.
(The episode you are thinking of, Behind The Laughter, has named several different states, which differ each time the episode airs, to further the joke that the Simpsons don't really live in any one state but a composite of all the states).

Cock fights and prostitution intersperse with funerals, as several men (one of which is named Homer Simpson — I've always wondered if Groening read this book) fight for a chance to sleep with Faye Greener, a vacant 17-year-old whose father is an aging vaudevillian.
The Day of the Locust is generally considered the better work (perhaps in part because West had more room in which to work, as Miss Lonelyhearts is only fifty-eight pages long).

nasty - academia at its brattiest
His 1939 novel The Day of the Locust serves to provide a link between West’s literary response to the modernism of the 1920s and its counterpart in the spiritual climate of southern California.
We are told by the third-person narrator that Homer Simpson has come to California to die and his inner turmoil is only revealed through the frantic inner life of his hands that "trembled and jerked, as if troubled by dreams" (84).
Victor Comerchero even goes so far as to say that "The Day of the Locust is, and should be read as, a prose Waste Land" (121).

The Grotesque Landscape in Nathanael West
What these writers often ignore or provide only a cursory analysis of is the notion of a grotesque landscape, and it is this grotesque landscape that lends The Day of the Locust much of its frightening power.
The echoes of the cannons at the destruction of the battle stage sound the coming apocalyptic ending where West contrasts one product of Hollywood, the movie premiere, with another, more frightening one, Homer Simpson.
With this statement, Clark pinpoints the central thrust of The Day of the Locust, which remains one of the most condemning and apocalyptic satires of Hollywood and its metaphoric analogue, the American people.

During the filming of Locust, Donald and Francine lived in an enormous Gothic mansion up in Benedict Canyon, near Hollywood, with acres of lawn, an artificial waterfall, a sauna - and absolutely no furniture except the deckchairs and mattresses Donald hurriedly rented hours before they moved in.

The newsreel announcer at the end of the film seemed very Hitler-like to me, the obnoxious child actor called Homer Simpson a Nazi spy twice, and one of the characters said that you have to be Jewish to make it in Hollywood.

DVD Savant Review: The Day of the Locust
Homer Simpson is Frankenstein's monster, a gentle but crippled soul trapped in a body he can't seem to control (in the book Homer obsessed over his alien, oversized hands) and lacking any form of self-confidence.
The Day of the Locust winds up in a terrifying Grauman's premiere that goes completely nuts with a convincingly chaotic riot, where an announcer whips up the crowd because he thinks they're excited about a stupid show called The Buccaneer.
Unable to use any of Nathanael West's ominous text, Salt and Schlesinger recast The Day of the Locust in visual terms, seeingly using Tod Browning's Freaks as a guide.

Starring Donald Sutherland as the estranged and deeply religious Homer Simpson, The Day Of The Locust delves into the murky underbelly of the glamorous lifestyle of pre-war Hollywood, telling the story of a young actress and her attempts to become a movie star.
The Day of the Locust is a scathing and unrepentant film with superbly acted performances and a compelling message at its core.
The ferocious and tragic climax of the film, where crowds of people are made to look like a plague of locusts clambering across each other with insect-like intensity, is both enthralling and disturbing.

Turbula - Culture - "Lost angels and the search for something real"
The locusts, as West called them in "The Day of the Locust" – the best book ever written about Hollywood – are now everywhere.
In "The Day of The Locust," West eloquently tells a deeply haunting tale of a group of dreamers, hangers-on, has-beens and lost souls all living on the fringes of the movie biz.
He may seem like just a minor character, but this story is in subtle yet undeniable ways a story told from the perspective of Homer Simpson's innocence.
