 TV series on video
Homicide: Life on the Street: Baltimore seems to be a den of crime—especially murder.
The series is based on David Simon’s book of the same title and the plots are phenomenal, the characters are complex, and the dialogue intelligent—even witty at times.
I didn't mention that once you get hooked on a series, you're perpetually at least a season behind and without something like Tivo or the now-dinosaurian VHS recorder, you’re pretty much out of luck as far as catching up goes.

 Hill Street Blues
Despite cast changes, HSB never jumped and remains one of my favorite shows of all time (along with St. Elsewhere and Homicide: Life on the Street!) It was very sophisticated for it's time and few "cop" shows have been able to sustain the story and character development that HSB maintained for 6 years.
In MY book Hill Street will always be remembered as the show that all other cop shows, and even non-cop shows, tip their hats to.
HSB took one half step when Esterhauz died, another when Jablonski, and yet another when Ken Olin was brought in to temporarily replace LaRue; it finally made The Big Jump in Season 6, when creator Steven Bochco quit/was fired by NBC because he refused to cut the budget on the show.
