 Homiletics
Homiletics is the science that treats of the composition and delivery of a sermon or other religious discourse.
Of this we shall be better able to judge after considering the origin and history of homiletics; and the question will be noticed towards the end of this article.
At his request Valerio, Bishop of Verona, wrote a systematic treatise on homiletics entitled "Rhetorica Ecclesiastica" (1575), in which he points out the difference between profane and sacred eloquence, and emphasizes the two principal objects of the preacher, to teach and to move (docere et commovere).

 The State of Homiletics
A 1998 consultation among biblical and homiletics scholars led its organizers to conclude that “the primary problem is that in their initial formation preachers are not taught how to move from exegesis to interpretation of the Scriptures for preaching” (Reid and Hoppe: 18).
And finally, since the homily is “sacramental,” the homiletic preacher must be able to prepare and invite the assembly to experience anew the presence of God, in the liturgical assembly and in all of life.
As teachers of homiletics, we believe that preparation of all candidates for the preaching ministry is enhanced by participation in courses or programs in which collaboration in ministry is seen as normative.

So I am trying to sort of lobby the culture for a more inclusive, tolerant Christianity, and a Christianity that is more open to some of things that are going to happen in our culture in the next 100 years or so, and deal with it more positively.
HOMILETICS: You don’t like dogma, but you yourself are dogmatic in the sense that you have a well-crafted sense of truth.
HOMILETICS: On your web site, when you are defining what Christianity is, you refer to Paul’s comment about "knowing Christ and him crucified." You’re pretty much right in the mainstream of historic Christianity.

In addition to reviewing online catalogs containing homiletics course descriptions, a confidential survey was provided to each ELCA seminary professor teaching homiletics to request comments on their courses’ human communications components.
Based upon the research, homiletics courses in general make up less than 1% of the eight seminaries’ total Master of Divinity course requirements; furthermore, human communications and rhetoric components were overall insignificant parts of these homiletics courses.
This research’s findings indicate that although the current method of teaching homiletics is popular, the preparation is insufficient to help preachers analyze their audiences, construct and deliver effective sermons, and draw upon the competence required of ministers in contemporary organizational and institutional settings.

 Performance Turns in Homiletics
In many cases homiletical texts recommend a method of reading scriptures aloud to gain an experiential perspective on biblical texts and also to understand their bases in orality.
My goal is to legitimize it as a key term in homiletics and to hold up the term "performance" for renewed scrutiny in the discipline of homiletics.
What dominates in homiletics is (1) an interest in rhetorical forms, literary shapes, and theological intentions of Biblical texts as organizing principles for sermons, (2) the quality of the preacher's critical and imaginative resources for meeting the text, (3) a concern for the liturgical context for the performance of the sermon.
