Hominid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hominid is any member of the biological family Hominidae (the "great apes"), including humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans.
Certain morphological characteristics are still used conventionally (though incorrectly) to support the idea that hominid should only denote humans and human ancestors, namely bipedalism and large brains.
However, anthropologists use the term to mean humans and their direct and near-direct ancestors, despite the changes in the understanding of hominoid taxonomy that have happened in the past several decades.

 Hominid Species
Although the hominid fossil record is far from complete, and the evidence is often fragmentary, there is enough to give a good outline of the evolutionary history of humans.
It is the oldest known hominid or near-hominid species, dated at between 6 and 7 million years old.
This mixture, along with the fact that it comes from around the time when the hominids are thought to have diverged from chimpanzees, suggests it is close to the common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees.

 79.06.02: Hominid Evolution
In terms of a temporal record of hominid evolution, there is a serious gap in our knowledge; we know little or nothing of the period from 8 million to 4 million years ago, No wellpreserved and welldocumented hominid fossils have been found from this four millionyear span of time.
It indicates that this 3.5 to 4.0 foot tall hominid was welladapted for bipedal locomotion.
Major trends in hominid evolution include refinement of bipedal locomotion (probably the most significant evolutionary development), increase in brain size, and refinement of stereoscopic vision with a concurrent reduction in the importance of the sense of smell.

 Section II: Hominid Evolution
Chimp behavior can suggest how the female hominid may have gone about choosing the father of her child, for it is with the premise that the early hominid female participates in choosing her copulation partner, just as in chimpanzee society, that this theory begins to fall into place.
Briefly, we are proposing that for two million years, up to approximately 100,000 to 40,000 years ago, hominid evolution was driven by the criteria females used to select males for their procreation partners (Tanner, 1981) included males who were increasingly cooperative, social, and less aggressive (Young 1971).
In the hominid society, as in chimp and bonobo society (Goodall, 1988; Kano, 1992), the females shared in the decision to mate.

It is generally thought that this came about when the ancient hominid adopted the edge of the forest and plain and adapted to a life under the trees as opposed to in them.
The larger and stronger hominid male bore the rigors of the defense of the tribe.
The hominid female is the only one in the animal kingdom who has hidden her fertile time so completely that even she is not aware of when it is. Raising a human child is a long term process.

This ancient hominid quickly came to be known as Nebraska Man. Soon it was realized that the teeth were not actually human nor ape at all.
Luckily, for the discoverers before the symposium occurred, it was found that their hominid fossil was actually the skull cap of a four month old donkey.

The Hominids (Hominidae) are a biological family which includes humans, extinct species of humanlike creatures and now often the great apes: chimpanzees and bonobos (genus Pan), gorillas, and orangutans (genus Pongo).
The exact criterion for membership in the Homininae is not clear, but usually includes the species who share more than 97% of their DNA with the modern human genome, and requires the capacity for language and for simple cultures beyond the family or band.
A theory of mind providing the capacity to lie convincingly is a controversial criterion distinguishing the adult human alone among the hominids.

Early Hominid Evolution: Discovery of Early Hominids
It is likely that all of the early hominids, including humans, supplemented their diets with protein and fat rich termites and ants just as some chimpanzees do today.
The early hominid fossil-bearing strata in the cave also contained 195 stones that were from another location distant from the cave.
In any case, the presence of these stones suggests that not all of the early hominids in the cave were there as a result of being the victims of carnivores.

The oldest known hominid, Ardipithecus ramidus, is dated at 4.4 million years and is a recent discovery, announced in September 1994.
Russell Tuttle, an anatomist and paleoanthropologist and the University of Chicago, has proposed that the earliest hominids who walked erect were in fact tree-dwelling primates who descended to the ground when the Miocene forest began to shrink, and those who were able to walk erect survived.
Darwin's theory is that with the freed up hands that bipedality allows, hominids would be able to use tools, and the use of tools led to the development of greater intelligence.

Biologically, humans are defined as hominids of the species Homo sapiens, of which the only extant subspecies is Homo sapiens sapiens.
It has been estimated that the human lineage diverged from that of chimpanzees about 5 million years ago, and from gorillas about 8 million years ago.
However, recent news reports of a hominid skull approximately 7 million years old already showing a divergence from the ape lineage strongly suggests an earlier divergence.

habilis was the first hominid to exhibit the marked expansion of the brain (with an average cranial capacity of about 750 cc) that would become a hallmark of subsequent hominid evolutionary history.

Alien Hominid is developed by a group of people who call themselves The Behemoth, a tiny group who oversees every aspect of their newly formed empire.

Alien Hominid has fifteen levels, and I can’t imagine anything more frustrating than never seeing the last half of them because the game is too damn hard, so this feature is greatly appreciated.

The importance of this hominid is that scientists believe it to be forest dwelling, which counter-argues the theory that hominids became bipedal because they moved to a savanna environment.

The Homo genus is separated from the earlier hominids because of the emergence of tool use, language, and culture.

The implication of this dental difference is that the newly evolved hominids were living in a radically different, less competitive social structure than seen in modern chimps, he said.

The true hominid family tree, the one that actually happened in evolutionary history almost certainly is more bushy than the ones currently drawn.
The fossil gap between 3.7 and 5 to 8 million years ago will be difficult to fill because in much of their anatomy-especially their cranial and dentition these early hominid will be difficult to distinguish from the earliest ancestors of the modern African apes.
One clear trend through time in the hominid lineage was the increase in the size of cheek teeth and reduction in sizes of the front teeth, particular the canines.
