Topic: Homopolar motor

Homopolar motor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A homopolar motor is of essentially the same construction as a homopolar generator, in general called a homopolar machine.
Instead there are equal and opposite forces or torques on the two parts of the electrical circuit that carry the current, one of which must be able to slide or rotate (the rotor) while remaining in electrical contact with the other (the stator).
Other people are confused about homopolar machine operation because they do not realise that while special relativity says there is no such thing as absolute linear motion, it does recognise absolute rotation, and this is borne out by experiment.

The upper curve (a) shows the motor armature input power with a constant motor field current of 6 amperes as the speed is varied with no generator magnet excitation and is seen to reach a maximum of 4782 watts as the speed is increased to 6500 rpm.
Curve 14b shows the increase of motor armature power over that of curve (a) that results from energizing the generator magnet with a current of 16 amperes but with the generator output switch open so that there is no output current (and hence no output power dissippation).
The total motor armature input power under these conditions is thus the sum of (a), (b), and (c) and reaches a maximum of 6028 watts at 6500 rpm.

 NRL Press Release
The previous known record for a motor having a high Tc field winding and operating at a temperature of 77 K was 5 hp.
The motor is a dc homopolar or acyclic machine whose original design and construction used field magnets fabricated with niobium titanium superconducting wire, which is the most widely used superconducting material for magnet applications.
The NSWC homopolar motor was selected to demonstrate the performance of the high Tc materials, because it is a fundamental property of homopolar machines that there are no forces developed on the field winding of the motor in reaction to the electromagnetically induced torque in its armature (rotor).

Generating Free Energy "Homopolar Style"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Known for over 150 years, the Faraday homopolar generator has been claimed to provide a basis for so-called "free-energy" generation, in that under certain conditions the extraction of electrical output energy is not reflected as a corresponding mechanical load to the driving source.
In July, 1985, I became aware of and was invited to examine and test a so-called free-energy generator known as the Sunburst N Machine.
The total motor armature input power under these conditions is thus the sum of (a), (b), and © and reaches a maximum of 6028 watts at 6500 rpm.

 Re: 12VDC Motor Control Problem
If it is not a brush motor, then it must be a brushless or stepper or switched reluctance (or some other such thing) motor (since I rather doubt you have a homopolar motor).
If you have some sort of brushless (or other) motor, and the motor and drive electronics are both supplied from 12 volts then there could be several problems which are affected by the design of the drive.
The actual motor starting current though may be relatively low as the drive electronics acts to limit the current in order to protect *itself* from excessive current.

In the case of a homopolar generator, a voltage dependent on the rotational speed, magnetic field, and radius, is induced in a conductor moving within the magnetic field.
When current is drawn from the homopolar generator, it also develops a J x B force for the same reason as with the motor but is referred to as back torque or armature reaction.
The multi-rotor homopolar also does not include sliding contacts at each magnetized rotor rim but instead utilizes a suitable rolling means attached separately to magnets and also to the stator ring for intimately contacting and engaging non-slip rolling between magnets and stator as they orbit around the stator.

Sea Power: Electric Drive for DD(X) Sparks Competition Over Exotic Motors
DRS is a leading developer of permanent magnet motors, which use solid blocks of alternating north/south magnets made of a rare earth material called neodymium iron boron attached to the rotor to create a rotating magnetic field in place of the usual wire coils.
Mongeau concedes that the 36-megawatt motor would be "the world's biggest permanent magnet motor." DRS built a 5-megawatt motor, which was tested by the Navy, and other firms have made permanent magnet motors up to 10 megawatts, he said.
In case there are problems with the DRS motor, the Navy has a fallback in a 36-megawatt "advanced induction motor," a relatively safe upgrade to a conventional electric motor, Collins said.

On the Nature of Electrical Induction
Contemporary experiments have also shown the Faraday disc to be a superior motor or generator when the fixed exciting magnet is attached to and rotates with it, thereby removing a constant drag which is superimposed on the mechanical input, or output of the machine.
As a motor the one-piece homopolar machine produces the same amount of torque as an equivalent two-piece induction machine for measurements made with a blocked rotor.
The reduced drag obtained by physical connection of the magnet to rotate with the disc in the motor mode is not unambiguously useful since the torque output of the machine is only with respect to the rotating reference frame of the machine.

The generator may be recognized as a so-called homopolar, or acyclic machine, a device first investigated and described by Michael Faraday [3] in 1831 (Figure 4 and Figure 5) and shown schematically in Figure 6.
Various homopolar devices have been used for specialized applications [9] (such as generators for developing large currents for welding, ship degaussing, liquid metal magnetohydrodynamic pumps for nuclear reactor cooling, torque motors for propulsion, etc.), some involving quite high power.
The generator was driven by a 3 phase AC 40 horsepower motor by a belt coupling sufficiently long that magnetic fields of the motor and generator would not interact.

Most electric motors have 20 to 200 turns of wire each generating or moving in a magnetic field and in this way are very efficient as the voltage(pressure of electricity) is high and current(flow of electricity) is low and so very small sections of wire can be used.
The homopolar generator would have an application in say the electroplating industry where they need low voltages and high currents and if they had to generate their own power then this sort of machine could be usefull.
