  MSN Encarta - Marriage
Although marriage in contemporary industrialized societies usually requires religious or legal recognition, or both, some couples may live together as if they are married and not seek formal approval of their union.
In 2002 Canadian courts began legalizing gay marriage in a number of provinces, ruling that a ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional because it violated the equal rights provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In most of the United States, marriage between partners of the same sex is not legally recognized and the issue of homosexual marriage provokes controversy.

Concerned Women for America - TALKING POINTS:
Why Homosexual "Marriage" is Wrong
Homosexual sex is dangerous and destructive to the human body and powerless for human reproduction.
Homosexual marriage is as wrong as giving a man a license to marry his mother or daughter or sister or a group.
Granting a marriage license to homosexuals because they engage in sex is as illogical as granting a medical license to a barber because he wears a white coat or a law license to a salesman because he carries a briefcase.

Civilization Watch - February 15, 2004 - Homosexual "Marriage" and Civilization - The Ornery American
Regardless of their opinion of homosexual "marriage," every American who believes in democracy should be outraged that any court should take it upon itself to dictate such a social innovation without recourse to democratic process.
Just because homosexual partners wish to be called "married" and wish to force everyone else around them to regard them as "married," does not mean that their Humpty-Dumpty-ish wish should be granted at the expense of the common language, democratic process, and the facts of human social organization.
Civilizations that enforce rules of marriage that give most males and most females a chance to have children that live to reproduce in their turn are the civilizations that last the longest.

 Talking Points on Marriage
Marriage is the union of the only type of couple capable of natural reproduction of the human race—a man and a woman.
Homosexuals are free to have a “union” ceremony with each other privately, but they are not free to demand that such a relationship be solemnized and subsidized under the law.
Homosexual relationships, which usually lack both permanence and fidelity, are unlikely to change to fit the traditional model of lifelong, faithful marriage.

Talking Points Against Homosexual "Marriage" - Probe Ministries
Marriage isn't a right, it is a privilege that the state can and should regulate.
Marriage between a man and a woman promotes procreation and makes intimate sexual activity orderly and socially accountable.
One lesbian writer calls gay marriage "monogamy without fidelity." Another homosexual columnist writes of "a broader understanding of commitment." A recent Dutch study found that homosexual relationships last, on average, about 1-1/2 years and that men in those relationships have an average of eight partners per year outside their main partnership.

Homosexual marriage is a chimera of the real thing on which society depends for its continuation and health.
Restricting marriage to heterosexual couples continues to say that marriage is oriented toward procreation, and that sex is a social act oriented toward procreation and not merely a private rite of the couple.

Canadian Homosexual Marriage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
If Canada legalizes homosexual marriage, marriage laws in the United States could eventually be impacted by same-sex couples who travel from America to Canada to be "married" and then return to their home states.
Homosexual marriages performed in Canada will not be recognized in at least 37 states, including North Carolina, that have Defense of Marriage laws, which define marriage as only a union between one man and one woman.
But marriage law experts are concerned about other states, including those that border Canada, that do not have such laws, where a legal challenge to traditional marriage could be upheld.

Accuracy In Media - Weekly Column - KERRY LIES ABOUT HOMOSEXUAL "MARRIAGE"
Desperate to shed the label of Massachusetts liberal, Senator and presidential candidate John Kerry claims that his position on homosexual marriage is the same as that of Vice President Dick Cheney.
His book tells the story of Margaret Marshall, a supporter of homosexual marriage who is married to Times columnist Anthony Lewis and was installed as the Chief Justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
It was Marshall and her entire court that allowed the legislature in 2002 to refuse to vote on a constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage, even though supporters got 130,000 signatures and spent $1.7 million in the process to get the measure on the ballot.

Seventeen percent said it's against their religious beliefs, and one in five explained their position in more literal terms such as the definition of marriage involves a man and a woman or that the purpose of marriage is reproduction.

Some on the pro-gay-marriage side have kept me from coming to this conclusion for about two years with their disingenuous arguments and their habit of claiming all those who oppose such a legalization of gay marriage are theocratic homophobes.
I certainly didn't grow up fearing homosexuals, although I think my early and regular exposure to them led me to the understanding that I wasn't one of them far earlier than most young men even contemplate the issue.

This view of marriage radically sidelines the main feature that makes marriage unique and important as a social institution--that is, the attempt to bridge sex difference and struggle with the generative power of opposite-sex unions, including the reality that children often arise (intentionally and not) from heterosexual unions.
The marriages that emerge from the pages of these books are marriages of two people who rarely engage their communities.
Marriage is figured as something that is undertaken by, and that serves, only the husband and wife.

The Massachusetts Court Ruling on Homosexual Marriage
In defending the current practice of restricting marriages to heterosexual couples, Massachusetts officials had argued that the main purpose of marriage was procreation, that heterosexual marriage was best for child-rearing, and that gay marriage would impose a financial burden on the state.
The marriage would not automatically be considered valid by the federal government or other states, which would probably have to decide on their own whether to recognize a Massachusetts gay marriage.
Whether or not one agrees with the idea of homosexual marriage, this move was an act of defiance, of civil disobedience.

Same-sex marriage, or its equivalent, is being actively discussed in a few countries of the world, including Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland.
Currently, only one man and one woman can be joined in matrimony and have their marriages recognized by the state, except for residents of Massachusetts who successfully won a court battle for the right to marry.
Marriage has been available for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples since mid-2004-MAY. However, the state has an ancient miscegenation law on the books that was passed to prevent out of state inter-racial couples from coming to Massachusetts and marrying.

However, the 4-3 ruling stopped short of declaring homosexual couples should be granted the licenses and did not call for them to be immediately issued to the plaintiffs in the case.
