Homotherium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Homotherium is a machairodontin saber-toothed cat genus that lived approximately 3 million to 10,000 years ago in North America, Eurasia and Africa.
The best known species of Homotherium is Homotherium serum from North America, commonly known as the scimitar cat.
Its saber-like canine teeth were shorter than those of the Smilodon (incorrectly called the "saber-toothed tiger"); however, the scimitar cat's teeth were serrated on both sides, unlike those of Smilodon.

The Dino Pit Fossils: Homotherium serum
Homotherium serum, the scimitar-toothed cat, ranged throughout Texas during the Pleistocene.
Homotherium was a member of the felid lineage, which includes all extant and extinct cats (everything from lions to housecats) as well as the extinct saber-toothed cats.
Homotherium was about the size of a modern lion, but it had a lighter build with long forelimbs and relatively shorter hindlimbs.

 Paleocraft Homotherium latidens
Homotherium latidens, perhaps one of the most well known of the saber-toothed cats, belonged to a group of lion-sized saber-toothed cats that lived around 3 million years ago and are believed to have gone extinct about 500,000 years ago.
In comparison to its ancestor, the Machairodus, Homotherium possessed a shortened lumbar region and elongated radius. The forelimbs were much longer in proportion to their hind limbs.
Homotherium may have evolved and adapted to specific prey animals, as suggested by their distinct morphology.

Indeed, the worldwide association of various species of Homotherium with proboscidians (elephants and mastodons) and rhino remains, mainly those of juveniles, reinforces the idea that Homotherium preyed selectively on these tough-skinned animals.

Homotherium was a relatively long legged pursuit predator with the size of a modern lion (150-220 kg, according to regressions of body mass against postcranial measurements in modern carnivores; Anyonge, 1993), which had a comparatively large brain with an enlargedment of the optic centre, a condition similar to that of the cheetah (Rawn-Schatzinger, 1992).
serum was classified by the discriminant functions in the cursorial category but with a probability of only 0.6; the next group of most likely membership (0.4) was the ambush category.
The mean brachial index (103%) is intermediate to that in hyaenids and canids, whereas the mean crural index (tibia length/femur length, 78%) compares with that of the larger living felids; this species therefore had a postural stance that was rather intermediate between cursors and ambushers.

Turner believes it served either as adaptation for long distance hunting (110-112) or for the hunting of large prey such as young mammoths (163-166) and the white coloring may have been an adaptation in species that lived further north.
It is not to hard to imagine Homotherium species hunting elephants in similarly harsh conditions.
Because of the risk involved, I believe Homotherium might have lived in small prides.

Evolveing from Machairodus, Homotherium was rare but had an extended range across North America during the early Pliocene and extending into the Pleistocene from as far south as Mexico to as far north as Alaska.
The age of these rare fossils is divided between two points in time with the fossil of the upper arm bone being the oldest at around 3.5 to 2.5 million years, and the tooth at 1.9 million years at the Pliocene/Pleistocene time border.
However, based on notes by well known paleontologist, and my research, the jaguar discription is a "chimera"(a chimera was a mythical beast made up varius parts of other animals such as a eagle, lion, goat, ect) and is not a valid fossil taxon for the state of Arizona.
