Honda B engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The B-series Honda DOHC engines are the most popular and well known of the Honda engines.
engine and transaxle, must be swapped as a unit; normally, however, the entire powertrain is what is meant when "engine" swaps or availability of used "engines" is discussed with respect to front wheel drive cars.
The B-series engine was available in the United States 1994 Civic-based Del Sol; therefore the stock Honda motor mounts, axles, transmission linkage, and other auxilliary parts on the B-series engine (as well as the ECU, of course) will adapt it to any Civic of that era.

hondanews.com > Honda Insight -- Integrated Motor Assist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
As the IMA gasoline engine enters its mid- to high-rpm operating range, the electric motor assist ceases and power is solely supplied by the engine, which is operating in its high-rpm 4-valve mode.
Carburizing allowed Honda engineers to reduce the cross section of the connecting rods, thereby reducing their weight (always a penalty in a reciprocating engine) by 25 percent, while increasing their strength by more than 50 percent.
Then, when the IMA engine is operating with a richer air-fuel ratio, the catalyst combines these NOx molecules with the hydrocarbons and CO present in the exhaust to form water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Honda Insight - VTEC-E Engine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
In the Honda S2000 this method was chosen mainly to realise high engine speed; in the Insight's engine, the strength enhancing technology was applied to create a thoroughly slim design, achieving a reduction in weight of 30 per cent compared with a conventional connecting rod.
Honda's engine designers looked not only at the valvetrain arrangement, but also at the material and surface treatment of each new part.
In a conventional engine, piston-side thrust and the friction it generates are the result of the crankshaft's resistance to turning at this point.

Temple of VTEC Asia Reviews : 2004 Honda City VTEC
I asked the Honda R&D engineer in charge of the engine for the VTEC changeover point and was told it varies depending on the throttle position.
The engine now revs higher for the same throttle position and the engine sounds more rowdy (better relatively) and the idea is that for a (small) 'sporty sedan', one does not mind the more rowdy engine when one is indulging in some 'spirited' driving.
Somehow the re-tuning of the CVT-7 gearbox for the VTEC engine is quite appropriate for the drive up Bukit Tinggi as the engine revs were quite nicely placed around the 4000rpm region when I was charging around the corners and the more immediate throttle response made it possible to power out of the corners.

Does the engine crank over with a normal sound of resistance or does it have a sickly whining dead sound and spin over really quickly, this may indicate to you an engine mechanical problem (compression loss) due to washed cylinders, jumped timing chain or belt something like that.

Honda's pictorial representation of the VTC mechanism illustrates very clearly the operating principle of generic VVT - ie turning the camshaft in relation to the driving sprocket.

Honda performance for Honda engines is very well respected in the engine features charts that you may come across when reseaching through engine dealers, commercial engine manufacturers or through the popular car and engine forums where car fans meet to chat about who has the best transmission system!
This is because Honda, in keeping with many other car makers in Japan like Nissan, Subaru, Mazda and Toyota, build engine cylinders and other engine kits that are at the cutting edge both in the mileage, horsepower and engine performances departments.
They are able to freely avail themselves of technical information and engineering technology that they are then able to bring to bear on developing engines, engine parts and their engines performance in general.
