 2003 Honda Pilot - Review
Honda was certainly not the first Japanese automaker to bring cars to the U.S., nor were they the first to build a car based mini-SUV.
Honda was not the first company to offer a minivan, luxury SUV or high performance sports car under $40,000, but one could argue that they have done all those things better than the competition.
The LX version of the pilot is slightly less expensive and does not come with such features as Homelink, climate control, power driver’s seat, alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, remote entry, and a 7 speaker stereo w/ subwoofer.

Trailer Life: Honda Pilot 4WD   (Site not responding. Last check: )
June marked another milestone for Honda with the launch of another SUV the 2003 Honda Pilot, a refined and slightly stripped-down version of the popular Acura MDX, although the two share very few physical similarities other than chassis and drivetrain.
What a Pilot owner gets for the price is a remarkably tight, comfortable vehicle that feels a lot like the Odyssey minivan on the inside, with the mannerisms of an SUV and a very well-tuned suspension that is soft over rough surfaces, but tight in the turns.
From a towing standpoint, the Pilot has plenty of power with the 240-hp VTEC V-6 drivetrain it inherited from the Acura MDX But Honda conservatively rates the towing capacity at 4,500 pounds on premium fuel, which means it can easily handle fold-down trailers and some of the newer lightweight hardside towables.

Honda Pilot Reviews and Ratings - 2003 Honda Pilot
Honda Pilot, the newest addition to this automaker's stable, debuted in the spring of 2002, just in time for the summer driving season.
Honda sees these vehicles as appealing to the same customer set, primarily families who want a car-like, sporty, versatile SUV to serve everyday driving demands and family vacation travel - not a pure "utility" vehicle to take off-road or use for hauling heavy equipment, like a boat or a trailer.
Honda calls the look "classic SUV," although some drivers may call it "classic boring." Vaguely resembling an outsized CR-V, Pilot is distinguished from a bevy of competitor vehicles with only its prominent "H" badge in the front grille.

 IGN: 2005 Honda Pilot
Honda, being the smart and innovative company that it is, decided that the best SUV would be the one designed and built by Honda.
Honda needed an SUV that was geared more toward the "everyday" folk -- you know, the people that need a roomy truck for trips to soccer practice and weekend camping trips.
The fit and finish of all the materials are excellent, as it is in all Honda's, but something about the Pilot's interior just doesn't feel right to me. I'm gonna guess that it's the over-use of the color brown.

Introduced in late 2003, the Pilot replaced the Passport and it shares the same basic chassis and powertrain as the MDX, the complementary choice from Honda's upscale Acura division.
With those additions, the Pilot further enhances its position at the forefront of the midsize SUV ranks that include the Ford Explorer, Nissan Murano and Toyota Highlander.
Despite its best-buy status, the Pilot does have two less-than- spectacular considerations: curtain side airbags are not available on any model, and its fuel rating of 17 in city driving and 22 in highway use is fine for its category but hardly an economical plus.

The Pilot is about two inches taller and four inches wider than the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Ford Explorer, and the Toyota Highlander, so it has a noticeable edge in head and shoulder room (though not rear-seat leg room).
Much of the Pilot's magic all-weather mobility comes from the simple combination of eight inches of ground clearance, a wide front track of 66.5 inches, and fairly narrow 235/70SR-16 tires.
The ride is exceptionally quiet, but the suspension feels soggy, and the steering wheel is dead in your hands, reminding you that the Pilot shares a lot of hardware with the Honda Odyssey minivan.
