  motoring.co.za - Honda VFR800 V-TEC — the great all-rounder
It’s part of Soichiro Honda’s legacy, the corporate perception that Honda motorcycles must be all things to all riders, and it speaks volumes about the company that it so very nearly succeeds.
Heads rolled at Honda R&D and the bike was re-engineered as a sort of Swiss watch on two wheels, expensively over-engineered with superb materials and ultra-costly, gear-driven camshafts.
The rest of the drive train is the mixture as before; pure Honda, with a bomb-proof, slightly grabby, clutch and a noisy gearbox that’s notchy at low revs but much slicker when you’re in a hurry.

Motorcycle Online: 1998 Honda VFR800FI Interceptor Introduction
Essentially, what Honda did with the new 800 is remarkable: they improved everything without losing any of the other characteristics that made the 750 such a well-regarded, if not top-selling motorcycle.
Honda claims that cooling efficiency is improved by taking advantage of the difference in air pressure between the higher-pressure air cavity and the lower pressure outer fairing surface, drawing air through the radiator at highway speeds.
When the front brake is squeezed, the two outer pistons of the front brake are activated and via a second master cylinder and a PCV valve the middle caliper of the rear brake engages.

Having ridden a VFR800 I have to say that the suspension is on the firm side of comfy, offering control and feedback while allowing you to sail over surface irregularities with ease.
Honda's updated VFR800 proved it's still the world's best all-rounder with a long-distance tour and a scratching race at Cadwell Park.
However, those in the UK should check with Honda UK first, as I have heard that they will fit a replacement reg/rec for free as a warranty part if the bike is less than 5 years old.

 VFR800
This adoption of V4s was supposed to signal a long term change of direction for Honda away from the straight 4s they had first employed on the CB750 of '67.
The problems with the motor severely dented Honda's reputation for bullet-proof bikes and led to a rapid switch back to straight fours with the CBR range of bikes.
Honda UK replaced it under warranty without any quibbles once I'd remembered to post off the change of owner info on the warranty.

If a Honda CBR is a BMW 3 series and the Blackbird is the 7 series; then the VFR would have to be compared to a Lexus.

2006 Honda VFR 800 VTEC: a few modifications and a return to perfection
Since its last evolution in 2002, the V4 engine of the famous Honda VFR has been equipped with a new variable valve timing system, criticised by some users for an occasional lack of discretion.
Honda has therefore looked into the matter and taken the opportunity to make its vision of sport touring cleaner and more economical.
Which is why Honda prefers to work on improving the existing model rather than offering a major evolution too soon.

 2007 Honda VFR800
Over the years, the keen sporting edge of the VFR was tempered as Honda groomed it more towards being an excellent all-round motorcycle with a sport-touring slant – even offering colour-coded hard bags and top box as an option.
And, following Honda's worldwide "green" commitment, the VFR meets stringent Euro and California '08 emissions standards while averaging 5.6 to 6 litres of gas for every 100 km.

In the VFR800, the VTEC essentially means the engine transforms from a eight-valve to a 16-valve unit, depending on whether it's below or above 7000rpm, and offering a choice between maximum power or maximum economy.
Throw in the latest generation DCBS, fuel injection and Honda's HISS security ignition, and it's easy to see this is truly a motorcycle of the 21st century.

No matter what the reason, the fact is that the VFR800 is still an excellent bike that is holding its value well in the marketplace and represents a brilliant used buy.

Honda’s much loved and highly respected VFR debuted in 1986 as the advanced, aluminium-framed VFR750F Super Sport, and has seen several evolutions of its design and specifications since then, culminating in the stunningly styled, high performance VFR and VFR-ABS sports touring masterpieces released in 2002 and now still in production.

 IOL: 2500km cross-country on Honda's VFR800
When IOL originally reviewed the Honda VFR800 V-Tec in February 2002 our time with the test bike was limited and we concentrated on throwing Honda's big V-four at the horizon, scarcely stopping to draw breath — I didn't even take time to photograph it and we used Honda's own publicity shots for the article.
Once hot to trot, the Honda's "Jekyll and Hyde" powerband returns; just under 7000rpm (152km/h in top, if you must know) the second inlet valve in each cylinder suddenly starts working, the air box lets rip with a brassy howl and the bike leaps forward, making overtaking a joy and a pleasure.
What was perhaps more telling was that Honda's all-rounder achieved measurably better fuel efficiency on the trip up than on the return leg, when average speeds were seriously curtailed by bad weather.

Honda bullet proof production, they don't mind the bad weather (salt does eat them)and boy when you open the trottle you will get a huge smile on you face and the local state trooper will be after you.
The Honda will give you a lot more upper-end power and sharper handling at the price of a much sportier, relatively cramped position (especially legs) and a lot less lower-end grunt.
The VFR now inhabits a bit of a twighlight world where its not a tourer or a sports tourer and is bettered by many sportsbikes like the R1 and loses out to cheaper bikes like the Fazer 1000 that are more powerful, handle just as well and are even more practical.
