Yet, despite the homages to his influences, the musicians playing with him, and the very town in which the album was recorded, Honeycomb is one of Black's most intimate collections of songs, and the closest he's come to a traditional singer/songwriter solo album.
Like Show Me Your Tears, Honeycomb is a remarkably personal album, and it's still a bit of a shock to hear one of alternative rock's most famously cryptic artists reveal so much about his life in his music.
Honeycomb is steeped in tradition, yet manages to buck it at the same time; while not all Pixies and Frank Black fans will appreciate its mellow maturity, it's an intimate treat for those who follow its lead.

 Cokemachineglow.com : Frank Black: Honeycomb
Honeycomb begs the question of whether an artist can and should be considered out of context.
But with Honeycomb it’s an interesting question not just because of the multifaceted nature of Black’s solo career (arguably starting with Trompe le Monde), but also because of the last year and a half of Pixies mania.
Honeycomb so clearly distances itself from the work of the Pixies that it practically begs to be seen on its own terms.

Honeycomb was made before the Pixies got back together, and, had it been released then, it would probably have received a dismissive or churlish response from a world desperate for Black to sound the way he used to.
Honeycomb emerged from these brief but fruitful sessions as a unified album of Americana-tinged tracks that at times sound like nothing you would ever expect of a man who’s spent the past months with his face coated in eyeliner, screaming “It’s educational” to audiences across the world.
Honeycomb is miles away from where Blonde on Blonde was for Dylan, but it does reside in a similar abode, with its emphasis on solid songwriting and musicianship that supports the songs rather than takes control of them.

"Honeycomb" is a true renaissance for an artist that one felt a little at the far end of the hole (despite the doubtless reformation financially juicy of the Pixies).
This album is not in the last analysis that the fourth album solo of Frank Black if one separates his collaboration more or less succeeded with the Catholics.
An excellent albums therefore, of which the palm must be attributed to the title eponym of the album "Honeycomb", his better piece since at least 10 years.

 Frank Black: Honeycomb (2005): Reviews
Honeycomb is really closer to the Dylan of New Morning than Blonde On Blonde; an angry young man finally transformed by a new voice and outlook.
Honeycomb isn't a great album -- it's too tentative and self-restrained for that -- but it's quite a good one.
[Honeycomb has] some of Black’s most mature songwriting to date and a chilled-out sound that plays like the cure to a hangover after a night of Pixies-soundtracked debauchery.

Honeycomb is a work of maturity and depth, and the sound of a musician not afraid to move on.
All in all, this an album to own and appreciate through repeated listenings -particularly in the early morning or late at night- and let yourself be enveloped by the unhurried feel of Black's confessions.
It's a warm, engaging and solid album, (surprisingly so given how quickly it was recorded) and the session musicians are excellent, their loose yet supple playing showing up the competent bar band chops of the now-defunct Catholics.

Her album boasts all of these sounds, accompanied by pedal steel guitar and a variety of string instruments, courtesy of Al Weatherhead, who supplied similar musical eclecticism on many other records, including Mascott’s “Dreamer’s Book” and Daniel Johnston’s “Fear Yourself.” O’Connor’s record was also mixed and produced by Weatherhead.

Pixies' Frank Black To Release New Solo Album
Pixies frontman Frank Black is to release his first solo album since 1996’s ‘The Cult of Ray’.
The Americana-flavoured album was recorded over a four-day period in April 2004, a few days before the Pixies kicked off their very first reunion tour date last year.
The new album entitled ‘Honeycomb’ was produced by Jon Tiven (B.B. King, Robert Plant) who also worked with Black on his 1994 ‘Headache’ EP.

The reason for this is probably that across the eight or nine albums that Black has released on his own, or under the Frank Black and the Catholics moniker his albums have lacked consistency throughout them.
The album has a real natural feel to it, it flows beautifully, no doubt helped by the fact that it was recorded in four days, with most of the first takes making it to the final cut.
Despite a couple of cover versions on the album (a delightful take on Gram Parsons Dark End of the Street, Song of the Shrimp from an Elvis film and the playfully melodic Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Grove Day which was written by Doug Sahm) this is a deeply personal record for Black.

The album 'Honeycomb Lounge' is an amalgamation of influences culminating in a sexy deep house album charged with musicality and class.
While Honeycomb Lounge weighs in a bit more on the jazzier side of house, the album still has the occasional odd piece of disco-funk like Payday, to make this project both a value as upfront dancefloor material at the local club and background atmospheres at hip hotel bars and lounges.

Blogcritics.org: REVIEW: Frank Black Goes Nashville With Honeycomb
Honeycomb, Frank Black's first solo album since 1996's The Cult of Ray, takes any preconceived notions of the legendary Pixies founder's indie and punk leanings, and turns them upside down.
The album flows like honey as the title suggests, though it includes a diverse, genre-bending group of tracks, ranging from modern alt-country flair to 50's rock with a cover of "Song of the Shrimp," originally performed by Elvis in the film Girls, Girls, Girls.
Although the recording session was short, this album has been in the works for years, ever since Black heard Dylan's revolutionary 1966 album.

I've posted this unreleased album because apparently FB has decided to rerecord most, if not all of the album with new, more expensive sessions players (presumably bought with his newfound Pixies money), inlcuding Lyle Workman (sweet!) and this incarnation of Honeycomb may never be commercially released.
This is, in all likelyhood, a rare, unreleased album like that other rare, unreleased album that he never released.
NOTE: For those that are adamantly against pirating, FB came on the FB.net message boards and didn't seem particularly upset that this was leaked...he seemed to enjoy reading the feedback, and actually provided tabs for one of the songs for someone who was trying to play it.

Frank Black Honeycomb Album Review - SoundsXP
Honeycomb was recorded in Nashville just before the Pixies kicked off their reunion tour (which, Black’s publicity is keen to remind us, was Spin Magazine’s Comeback of the Year), and it feels like someone reaching for a Hamlet cigar while the press and reunion tensions were taking their toll.
At around the time the Pixies were thrashing out singing duties for their first EP, Elvis Costello went to the States and recorded his 11th album, King of America.
A little more essence of the Pixies might have helped lift Honeycomb from a pleasant diversion to something we’ll still be reaching for a year from now.

Honeycomb may have taken just four days in a Nashville studio to record, but it will surely be remembered as perhaps the greatest Frank Black LP (to date, at least) and perhaps even as the record that made it cool to like country again (get your coat, Keith Urban).

A 'Honeycomb' of Black surprises - Entertainment - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Just days before he was to set out on a reunion tour last year with seminal '80s hard-core rockers the Pixies, frontman Frank Black holed up in a Nashville studio to record an album that had been germinating for a decade.
The project was theoretically titled "Black on Blonde," a nod to Bob Dylan's beloved 1966 album "Blonde on Blonde," also recorded in Nashville.
Black — he of cryptic phraseology and maritime mythology — meant the song, with its kumbaya chorus, sincerely, which is the most surprising thing on an album full of surprises, most of them pleasant.

 Honeycomb by Frank Black CD
Recorded in Nashville and redolent of the famed sound of that city, HONEYCOMB contains none of the roaring guitar, bone-crunching aggression, or blood-curdling screams for which Black is best known.
Instead, the album drifts like a lazy afternoon, with an introspective front-porch feel a la distinctive, literate songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Joe Henry, and Neil Young.
Clueless rock hipsters might turn their noses up at the warm, lovingly crafted textures here, but HONEYCOMB ultimately makes plain what has been true all along: that Frank Black is one of pop music's great songwriters.
