Order of the Garter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the name suggests, the Order's primary emblem is a garter bearing the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (which means, "shame upon him who thinks evil of it") in gold letters.
While she was dancing with or near King Edward at Eltham Palace, her garter is said to have slipped from her leg to the floor.
When the surrounding courtiers sniggered, the king supposedly picked it up and tied it to his own leg, exclaiming "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Shame on him who thinks evil of it).

When 'Honi Soit' began publication in 1929 Gosper was sports editor and chief of staff under the editor, Arthur Crouch.
The constitution and the proposal for compulsory membership were both approved by the Senate on 9 December 1929, and the Students' Representative Council came into being, with 'Honi Soit' as its official newspaper.
In the accounts of the sub-committee published in 'Honi Soit' on 5 August 1931 Gosper made some criticisms of the Union's charges.

The most popular one involves Joan, Countess of Salisbury, whose garter, whilst she was dancing with the King, is said to have slipped from her leg to the floor.
When the surrounding courtiers snickered, the King picked it up and tied it to his own leg, exclaiming "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (the French may be loosely translated as "Shame on him who thinks ill of it"; it has become the motto of the Order).
According to another myth, Richard I, whilst fighting in the Crusades, was inspired by St George to tie garters around the legs of his knights; Edward III supposedly recalled the event, which led to victory, when he founded the Order.

It means ‘shame on him who thinks evil of it.’ The legend has it that King Edward III was dancing with one of the ladies of the court, known as the Fair Maid of Kent, when her garter fell down her leg to the floor.

In those days when it was the custom for the King himself to go to war, it was therefore the marshals duty to 'marshal' the army in groups with their banners and 'coats of arms'.
