Old slate quarries and Honister Hause Youth Hostel (in an old quarry workers' building) sit atop the bleak and treeless summit where the view of Honister Crag is on order.
Although driving Honister Pass can be challenging in the winter months, the road, connecting the beauty of the Buttermere and Borrowdale valleys, unfolds the dramatic scenery of the Lakeland mountains.
Honister Pass is on the B5289 between Buttermere and Seatoller.

Nestling between the peaks at the head of the Honister Pass in the Lake District, the Buttermere and Westmorland Green Slate Company Limited is England's only Slate Mine, recommended by those who provide tourist information for the Lake District.
At Honister are the "Road End," "Lancaster," and "Ash Ghyll" quarries, whilst across the coach road, and within sight as we stand, are the "Yew Crags" quarries "light sea green," "dark sea green," and "olive green." Concerning these varieties we shall have more to say later.
Honister slate was used extensively in local buildings but the best quality roofing slate was also exported far afield.

It passes alongside Derwent Water with good views of Catbells and the surrounding mountains.
This part of the route is very zigzagging, with gradients of 1 in 4 (25%) as it struggles up the 200 metres (600 feet) to the top.
The top of the pass is an upland wilderness, with barren slopes and many erratic boulders.

Its steep slopes were used for the British Hill Climbing Championship a few years ago, but today we were taking it as easy as we could.

A narrow ribbon of road winds its way down through the Honister Pass towards the beautiful stretches of water known as Buttermere and Crummock Water.
The narrow track that follows the contours about half way up the mountainside, once carried a narrow gauge rail track along which tubs of green slate were pushed after being mined in the workings which riddle the hill side.
After closing just over ten years ago, The Honister Slate Mine has reopened as a going concern to create products from the unique material whilst offering visitors the opportunity to venture underground a see the old workings for themselves.

To the east of the Newlands Pass is the amusingly named High Snockrigg and Robinson, which also provide a good walk if you're up for it.
The Honister Pass is a steep one, but if first gear is good on your car you can use it to knock a bit off some of the bigger hills.
To the north of Honister you can also attempt Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson, before descending (of course) to the charms of the Bridge Hotel Bar and a well-earned pint of Black Sheep.

From Honister Pass the route climbs the magnificent Great Gable using the Moses Trod Route, descending over Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts on the route back to Honister Pass.
As with all outdoor activities, the weather is an unpredictable factor, consequently you will need to provide yourself with sensible, reliable walking gear.
From Keswick follow the Borrowdale Road south, passing through Rosthwaite and Seatoller before climbing steeply towards the Honister Pass, a car ark behind the Youth Hostel at the top of the pass will be seen to the left.

 Pillar and Gable
On the other side of the mountain lies Gable Crag which, though it can be approached from Wasdale, is easier to get to from the top of Honister pass.
The path from Honister Pass continues westward past Gable Crag to Black Sail Pass and then continues via the High Level Route to Pillar Rock.
Before it reaches Black Sail however it passes beneath what must be the dirtiest crag in the district: Boat Howe Crags.

After a very fine breakfast at my BandB in Keswick, I drove along Barrowdale, up through Honister Pass for the start of the walk.
This was from a small car park at Gatesgarth at the western end of Honister Pass.
It wasn't long before I was at my next path, a turning south which dropped me down to the old Dubs Quarry track.
