Honjo, the first oceanographer to be presented with this honor, will accept the award May 12 from Emperor Akihito in ceremonies at the Imperial Palace in Japan.
Honjo is a senior scientist in the WHOI Geology and Geophysics Department.
Honjo joined the WHOI staff in 1970 as Associate Scientist and was promoted to Senior Scientist in 1982.

HMS Erin, of 394 tonnes, was built in 1933 and became an anti-submarine trawler in 1940.

Tasuku Honjo, who has led in the determination of the molecular basis of immunoglobulin class switching, will discuss the role of AID (Activation-induced Cytidine Deaminase) in class switch recombination (CSR) with somatic hypermutation (SHM).
One of the world's leading molecular immunologists, Honjo has demonstrated that switch region combination is critical, and he has cloned cytokines that are "switch factors." He also established the detailed ordering of immunoglobulin variable and constant region genes.
Honjo is professor of medical chemistry at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, and he was elected a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2001.

Honjo told Reuters Health that researchers have speculated the disease may involve an abnormal immune response because some patients have been shown to have antibodies to their own muscle protein and to certain chemical receptors.
However, Honjo noted, it has been unclear whether these so-called ``autoantibodies'' are the cause or a result of dilated cardiomyopathy.

TOKYO, May 2 (Kyodo) -- Two Japanese scientists, Tasaku Honjo and Ryuzo Yanagimachi, have been elected foreign associates of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Honjo, 59, dean of University of Kyoto's Faculty of Medicine, was honored for his contributions to immunology and is known in his field for having elucidated the mechanism behind cell division and cell reproduction.
Last year, Honjo was awarded the Cultural Order Award from the Japanese government.
