Elton John : Honky Chateau - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Considerably lighter than Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau is a rollicking collection of ballads, rockers, blues, country-rock, and soul songs.
The skittering boogie of "Honky Cat" and the light psychedelic pop of "Rocket Man" helped send Honky Chateau to the top of the charts, but what is truly impressive about the album is the depth of its material.
But what makes Honky Chateau a classic is the songcraft, and the way John ties disparate strands of roots music into distinctive and idiosyncratic pop -- it's one of the finest collections of mainstream singer/songwriter pop of the early '70s.

 honky chateau
Trading his blue suede shoes and Disney dwarf outfit for a soft piano style, Elton John is off and running with Honky Chateau, a lopsided structure of tepid rock numbers and muzak ballads.
There are several outstanding residents in John's Chateau, but without a doubt, the star boarder is "Rocketman," a stunning tale of space travel that soars to the ranks of an Elton John Classic.
Honky Chateau, as a whole, presents us with deeper ramifications than mere track analyses can encompass.

"Honky Chateau" along with "Tumbleweed Connection", "Captain Fantastic", "Elton John" and the sprawling "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" ranks as some of John's most artistically successful and powerful albums.
I can't place Honky Chateau in his pantheon of greats--and I'll explain why Tumbleweed Connection is a better choice.
"Honky Cat" is one of his most assured vocal/piano performances; after this and "Mellow", Elton would never again sing with such wild-yet-true abandon (maybe due to the ensuing production glitz).

Honky Chateau, Elton John :: Music Review :: ABC Gold & Tweed Coasts
"Honky Chateau" was Elton John's very first American Number One album, spending five weeks at the top of the charts.
The standout song on "Honky Chateau" is the psychedelic pop tune "Rocket Man", but Elton doesn't disappoint with other tunes such as the boogie number "Honky Cat', the cynical "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself", and the moving ballad "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters".
Elton John's "Honky Chateau" is a feast of memorable pop songs that are driven by catchy melodies and powerful hooks.

 Elton John
Honky Chateau, one of Elton John’s most fondly remembered albums, is possibly most representative of his problems as an artist.
A reference point for Honky Chateau would be the Kinks’ Muswell Hillbillies, an album that is adamantly British, yet metaphorically engages the cross-cultural differences and likenesses between American/British peoples.
On Honky Chateau, only "Rocket Man" and "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" avoid misguided American regionalism and transcend the rest of the material with melody and intelligence.

Elton John -- Honky Chateau (1972) Music Reviews - UK - Hippyland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Honky Chateau was produced when Elton was at the top of his game, creating immaculate pop classics with ease and vigour.
The first half of the album is testament to Elton's ability of crafting hooks and melodies with aplomb, with the charming "Mellow" and the morbidness of "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself", with its catchy hooks and meandering piano.
The albums title \'Honky Chateau\', had reference to Strawberry Studios, and was dedicated to Catherine Phillipe-Gerard, who was the manageress of the Chateau.

 Daily Vault - August 22, 1997
He had been ambiguous about what style of music he was trying to be more faithful to in his previous albums, but with Honky Chateau, his first chart-topper in the States, this dilemma is painted even clearer.
For the remainder of Honky Chateau, John and crew tend to sink back into a collection of the ballads and light pop that he had become known for in such a short time.
Honky Chateau was the start of John's big success in the United States, and for good reason.

 Elton John's Biography
Madman Across the Water was successful, but John achieved stardom with the followup, 1972's Honky Chateau.
Recorded with his touring band -- bassist Dee Murray, drummer Nigel Olsson and guitarist Davey Johnstone -- and featuring the hit singles "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat," Honky Chateau became his first American number one album, spending five weeks at the top of the charts.
Honky Chateau began a streak of seven consecutive number one albums -- Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1973), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), Caribou (1974), Greatest Hits (1974), Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), Rock of the Westies (1975) -- that all went platinum.

Comments for John, Elton, Honky Chateau - WWW Music Database
Honky Chateau combines Taupin's lyrics of classic Americana with Elton's sense of melody and a band that continually grooves, and the result is a great album.
Elton carries a distinctively soulful vocal and piano style on songs such as "Suzie," "Amy," and "Mellow," while his great talent for the melody shines on "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters." The true jewel of this album is "Rocket Man." Taupin's lyrics are original and thought-provoking, and Elton's vocals are as clear as ever.
It also made EJ a certified superstar, being that it featured two top ten hits ("Rocket Man", "Honky Cat") and was his first #1 album (and first in a string of #1 albums).

Issued in 1972, it marked the transition from the moody, heavily orchestrated music of 'Madman across the water' to the very commercial 'Don't shoot me....' from early 1973, and was the first album featuring the quartet of Elton, Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson (with occasional guest appearances) throughout.
Whilst 'Honky chateau' contains two quite excellent singles 'Honky cat' and 'Rocket man' (the latter one of my most favourite Elton songs), I have never felt that the rest of it matched the standard set by these two tracks.
This may be due less to the actual songs as to the arrangements, which are very sparse compared with the preceding 'trilogy' of albums lavishly orchestrated by Paul Buckmaster, and have not yet developed into the polished pop-rock of the 'Goodbye yellow brick road' era.

Elton's only major problem after the success of his first album was finding the right direction for his talent, and until Honky the path chosen led up a blind alley.
Honky Chateau was a sensational, unexpected comeback, as much a triumph of Dudgeon and Taupin's versatile professionalism as of Elton's musicality.
If Honky Chateau established Elton John as a leading contender for the bantamweight championship of rock and roll, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player should hand him the title.

John picked up the pace, he shed his influences and began to zero in on his own flamboyant identity as both a composer and a performer.
With 1973's "Honky Chateau," he began recording with his touring band, and the sound instantly became funkier, more electric, more flexible, and the innate catchiness of the songs seemed to increase exponentially at the same time.
John had already conquered the charts ("Honky Chateau" had spent a brief time at No. 1), this was his first indisputable smash.

By the time Elton John went to France to cut HONKY CHATEAU in 1972, he had already become the first act since the Beatles to land four albums in the American Top 10 simultaneously.
The results were successful, as the nonsensical "Honky Cat" and the Bowie-inspired "Rocket Man" became John's first Top 10 hits since the release of "Your Song" two years prior Honky Chateau.
John and co. reined in the lengthy, moody excesses of MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER, turning in a highly focused collection of beautifully crafted pop Honky Chateau.

The teen drama of "Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" is perfect, though I'm amazed how many here don't seem to get that the song is upbeat because the teen in question is giddy with the prospect of watching those who aren't letting him set his own curfew bathe in guilt after he offs himself.
