It is about a man and his love for his nephew, his music and his his desire to make a name for himself before his TB´ll end it all.
Honkytonk Man has always been with a small audience and unless you like Clint Eastwood and know his movies, you probably wouldn't have heard of this movie.
"Honkytonk Man" is one of Clint Eastwood's most offbeat and atypical films; unfortunately, for the first hour, it is also one of his dullest.

DVDFILE.COM: Honkytonk Man review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A lilting, melancholy lullaby of a movie, Honkytonk Man is representative of 80's era Clint Eastwood: obsessed with Americana, full of heart, and back-to-basics in its narrative simplicity.
In Honyktonk Man, Clint's journey isn't so much one to reclaim a lost love or save the day so much as it is to hold on to some shred of authenticity in a world gone mad.
Honkytonk Man may not be the best film Eastwood ever made, but over 20 years after the fact, it is so atypical it makes for a fascinating, refreshing journey.

The storyline is basic stuff, the tale of a man with a checkered past trying to put his life back together and make one last run at his dreams.
Such was the case with Honkytonk Man, which seems like an excuse to put together a country music soundtrack, which happens to feature some of Eastwood's own compositions.
Honkytonk Man is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen.

It was also one of the earlier films directed by Eastwood to reveal the unmistakable disparity between the silent assassin persona audiences had come to embrace in him and the much gentler humanist behind the camera.
Honkytonk Man looks and sounds pretty good for its age, though the touted "all-new digital transfer" sometimes tends to betray a level of wear and tear in the source print.
While not enough of a grand statement to be taken as a career turning point, Honkytonk Man nonetheless signaled a change in the winds for Clint Eastwood.

Born in San Francisco as the son of a steel worker, Eastwood did a stint in the United States Army before moving to Los Angeles to study at Los Angeles College.
In these and his third film with Leone, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo) (1966) he found one of his trademark roles, the mysterious "man with no name".
All three films were hits, particularly the third, and Eastwood became an instant international star, redefining the traditional image of the American cowboy.

Set during The Great Depression, Honkytonk Man tells the story of Red Stovall (Clint Eastwood), a down on his luck musician who is getting one last shot at glory: he's been called in for an audition at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
But Honkytonk Man isn't so much about whether Red will get his shot at glory, as it is about the bonding relationship that Red and Whit make with each other as they journey across the country.
Eastwood — Honkytonk Man turns out to be a pretty good film overall, and while it probably won't go down as one of the more popular films Clint has made, this is one of those movies that I appreciate more and more each time I watch it.

Biography for Clint Eastwood   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
In the early eighties Eastwood made credible movies with Honkytonk Man (1982) and Firefox (1982), but it was the fourth sequel to 'Dirty Harry', Sudden Impact (1983), that made him a viable star for the eighties.
Reportedly an easygoing but shiftless young man who'd already worked in a variety of dead-end menial jobs (such as gas-station attendant) before reaching Hollywood in 1955, Eastwood wangled a contract at Universal thanks to director Arthur Lubin, and played bit parts that year in Francis in the Navy, Tarantula and Revenge of the Creature
That year, all three were finally released in the U.S., and "The Man With No Name" (as his character was billed) suddenly found himself atop the box-office charts.

 :: rogerebert.com :: Honkytonk Man
Clint Eastwood produced and directed "Honkytonk Man," and stars in it as a Depression-era loser who drifts through the South with his young nephew, aiming eventually to get to Nashville and maybe get on the Grand Ol' Opry.
A child of the Depression, he spent his early boyhood trailing a father who pumped gas along dusty roads all over the West Coast.
The entry goes on to list the usual odd jobs (logger, steel-furnace stoker) that all actors seem to hold down on their way to stardom, but Id read enough to support my intuition that "Honkytonk Man" means a lot to Eastwood in ways that may not be immediately apparent.
