		The Honokaa Sugar Company was chartered on May 8, 1878 and Schaefer served as its president for a period of forty years.
		In 1919 Honokaa Sugar Co. was able to ship sugar directly to the mainland using this method.
		Correspondence between Honokaa Sugar Co. and the agency, F.A. Schaefer and Co., begins in 1879 and continues to 1939.

		The purpose of the Hawaiian Irrigation Company was to provide water for irrigation and fluming to the plantations on the Hamakua Coast, primarily Honokaa Sugar Co., Pacific Sugar Mill, and Paauhau Plantation.
		The tunnel of the Lower Ditch, traveling the 8.9 miles from the Kawainui intake to the weir at Kukuihaele, was one of the longest in Hawaii.
