  USS Honolulu (CL-48) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second Navy ship named for the city of Honolulu, Hawaii, the cruiser was launched on 26 August 1937 at the New York Navy Yard, sponsored by Helen Poindexter (the daughter of Joseph B. Poindexter, the Governor of Hawaii), and commissioned on 15 June 1938, with Captain Oscar Smith, USN, in command.
The Honolulu departed from the staging area at Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands on 12 October 1944 and steamed towards the Philippines for the invasion of Leyte Island.
The USS Honolulu remained at Norfolk for the duration of the war, undergoing repairs, and after a shakedown cruise in October 1945, she steamed to Newport, Rhode Island, for duty as a training ship.

Honolulu operated out of Espiritu Santo in early 1943 with Task force 67 in an attempt to engage the `'Tokyo Express." During May she engaged in heavy bombardment on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands.
Honolulu remained at Norfolk for the duration of the war undergoing repairs and after a shakedown cruise in October 1945, sailed to Newport for duty as a training ship.

I built my 1/700 scale U.S.S. Honolulu from the Corsair Armada kit with the addition of photoetched brass sets from Tom's Modelworks.
The U.S.S. Honolulu (CL-48) was a light cruiser that served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II.
After the war, she served as a training vessel off the east coast for a few years before being sold for scrap in 1949.

At Kula Gulf, Helena was torpedoed and sunk, with 1155 survivors, rendering her unable to participate at the Battle of Kolombangara, where St.Louis and Honolulu fought together with HMNZS Leander, and as the two others, suffered torpedo hits.
The only other wartime loss, besides Helena, was Phoenix, which sank in 1982 due to torpedos from HM submarine Conqueror, as Argentine General Belgrano.
