On Aug. 20, 1932, South Park College was renamed Lamar College in honor of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas and the man regarded as the founder of public education in Texas.
Professor Cherry was born in 1915 in Weatherford, TX and after graduating from Weatherford High School, he attended Weatherford Junior College for one year and then transferred to The University of Texas, where he earned a BA in Physics and Math with honors in 1937.
On March 25, 1960, the Delta Beta Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu, the national electrical engineering honor society was installed with 17 members.

Mirabeau's career began as a cavalry officer in 1767, but he was soon sent to prison on the Island of Ré for his escapades.
Born at Bignon near Nemours on March 9, 1749, Honoré Gabriel de Riqueti, later Comte de Mirabeau, was the son of a distinguished physiocratic author, Victor de Riqueti, Marquis de Mirabeau, known as the "friend of the people" for his reform proposals.

In 1840, the legislature of the Republic of Texas created a new county and named it in honor of Georgia-native Mirabeau Lamar, who was a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836.
The postmark shows Mirabeau Lamar and the outline of the county named in his honor.
To mark the event, the U.S. Postal Service issued a pictorial postmark for use in canceling mail at a special postal station set up for the day-long celebration.
