John Rupert Martin writes, "The ordered vistas which Pieter de Hooch unrolls in his paintings of serene Dutch interiors owe much of their charm to the softly changing effects of light and shadow as the observer moves, in imagination, from one room to the next" (224).

Pieter de Hooch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De Hooch was born in Rotterdam to Hendrick Hendricksz de Hooch, a bricklayer, and Annetge Pieters, a midwife.
It is likely that de Hooch handed over most of his works to la Grange during this period in exchange for board and other benefits, as this was a common commercial arrangement for painters at the time, and a later inventory recorded that la Grange possessed eleven of his paintings.
The early work of de Hooch, like most young painters of his time, was mostly composed of scenes of soldiers in stables and taverns, though he used these to develop great skill in light, color, and perspective rather than to explore an interest in the subject matter.

The Pieter de Hooch exhibition recently on view at the Wadsworth Atheneum was the first chance there has ever been to see how some 40 of his paintings (roughly one-fourth of his extant work) would look hung together in one place.
Both de Hooch (1629-84) and Vermeer (1632-70) concentrated on the subject of the domestic interior, and, for a few years, they lived and worked in the same town.
This is evidence that Vermeer saw de Hooch as an inventive painter in matters of composition.

Pieter De Hooch was a genre painter noted for his interior scenes and use of light.
De Hooch often depicted middle-class families in ordinary interiors and sunny courtyards, performing their humble daily duties in a calm atmosphere disrupted only by the radiant entry of natural light penetrating a door or window.
After his move to Amsterdam, De Hooch's colors darkened and his simple domestic interiors were replaced by palatial halls and country villas.

In the period between 1654 and 1665, when de Hooch was living in Delft, he created such works as The Card-Player, leaning heavily on the influence of Vermeer and the Rembrandt student Carel Fabritius.
When de Hooch moved to Amsterdam in I667 where he moved in high circles, his interiors became increasingly elegant, and his simple "households" were gradually replaced by palatial interiors.
At the same time, the portrayal began to lose its precision and the vitality of the Dutch genre painting began to fade.

Turner and Hooch is old enough now that, I’m assuming, anyone who has any interest in the film would have seen it already.
Later, after a thug kills the crusty old man, Turner finds himself stuck with Hooch due in part to a sense of loyalty but mostly because he suspects Hooch might be able to identify the killer.
The most obvious example of this is the scene in which Turner and Hooch are on a stakeout and have to spend several hours in a car.

"Turner and Hooch" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Turner assumes that the man's dog "Hooch" probably saw the murder and can ID the killer (which is correct); and since Hooch is too large and ferocious for ordinary animal handlers, the normally ultra-neat Turner must take the neglected animal home to keep him from being destroyed.
There are several on-screen killings, implied sex between Turner and a lady veterinarian whom he's known for only a few days (with her making the first move), and some sexual joking and other mild profanities from and between the cops.
As for Hooch he didn't have much of a problem to begin with, except the fact that his master was killed and finally at the end when they get the bad guy Scott and Hooch got what they wanted.

Woman and Maid in a Courtyard by HOOCH, Pieter de
Pieter de Hooch has gone down in art history as a painter who rendered Dutch domestic life with great precision.
De Hooch opens a window on narrow alleyways, small gardens and courtyards, and gives us a glimpse into the antechambers and living-rooms of the Dutch citizens.
Yet, whereas the paintings of Vermeer tend to be dominated by a self-absorbed figure pausing momentarily in some activity, de Hooch's paintings are dominated by the room itself, by its perspectives and views through doors and windows where people become an integral part of the interior.
