The Hooded Vulture, Necrosyrtes monachus, is an Old World vulture in the order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks.
Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals and waste which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation, including waste tips and abattoirs.
The Hooded Vulture is a typical vulture, with a bald pink head and a greyish “hood”.

The king vulture, of which the Lappet-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotus is the dominant southern African representative, is a massive beast with a very powerful beak that aids the bird in opening up the carcasses of fallen animals.
Vultures arrive from far and wide to compete for a carcass, and this usually goes hand in hand with serious disputes about the spoils.
Not all vultures can grab the spoils like the griffons do and the more wary Hooded Vulture will patiently wait on the outskirts of the feeding frenzy for another vulture to drop a piece of meat, then stoop on the morsel with great satisfaction.

On 3/27/01, a turkey vulture was perched on a chimney on our building (9:30AM); we watched it 10 yards away for 20 minutes through a window before it flew off to join another vulture.
A bit further up 146 in Millbury, a kettle of 13 Turkey Vultures and 2 Red-taileds were spotted in the same place and at the same time we had another good kettle last week.

The striking underwing pattern - fl flight feathers and white coverts - makes the adults very distinctive.
The only other raptor with similar markings is the pale-morph Booted Eagle, but the vulture is larger with a distinctively tiny, narrow head and diamond-shaped tail.
This unusual shape, pointed at both ends, separates the plain brown juvenile birds from all other raptors except the huge Lammergeier which has longer more angular wings and a much longer tail.
