The Hook and Cod wars (Dutch: Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten) comprise a series of wars and battles in Holland between 1350 and 1490.
Most of these wars were fought over the title of count of Holland, but the underlying reason was the power struggle of the bourgeois in the cities against the ruling nobility.
As a reaction, the Cod league was formed in May 23, 1350 by a number of supporters of William.

History of Newfoundland Cod Fishery.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The inshore fishery was dependent on the cod migrating from their offshore feeding and breeding grounds, each year in early summer, and each harbour and inlet had certain peculiarities.
They set up operations on sites that were closest to the nearby fishing grounds, and then built their stages for splitting and salting the fish; their cook rooms and bunkhouses for the crews; and the drying racks or flakes on which the fish were dried.
Thereafter, the Newfoundland cod fishery was shared, seasonally every summer, by the English and French - with the latter concentrating on the Grand Banks, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on Newfoundland's south coast.

THE First Comers, after they had established their farms, quickly turned to the sea for the profit there was in it: for since Cabot's voyages, and before, men had known of the riches that lay there, and the earliest history of the Atlantic coast is that of its rival fisheries.
Until well up to the middle of the next century the catching of mackerel, bass, cod, and herring, duly regulated, was conducted from shore by seines, weirs, pounds, and "fykes." And then men put to sea for voyages to the Banks, and prospered.
The schools of mackerel and cod there made rich feeding for the whales which not infrequently met their death when greed tolled them to shoal waters and they were left high and dry by the receding tides.

 languagehat.com: HOOKS AND CODS.
For a good deal of the fifteenth century the rest of the Low Countries was plagued by a curious civil war, or rather a war between rival nobles and their adherents, the so-called "Hook and Cod Wars".
By an order of 26 December 1481, it was officially forbidden for anyone to say: "Thou art a hook" or "Thou art a cod".
The war itself is curious enough (those interested in finding out more about it can do so here; you can either scroll down to 1349 or do a Find search on "cods"), but the fact that Amsterdam stayed out of it by forbidding people to talk about it is quite amazing.
