The median income for a household in the county was $27,868, and the median income for a family was $35,114.

In 2000, 5.4% of the county households were single-parent families, compared to an average of 12.4% for Nebraska.
The Nebraska rate was 6.6 per 1,000 live births and the Nebraska 2010 objective is to reduce mortality to no more than 4.5 infant deaths per 1,000 live births.
The current Nebraska  objective is to have at least 90% of all children in this age group appropriately immunized.

Mullen remains the county seat and is the only surviving town in the county.

Despite the fact the Middle Loup and the Dismal Rivers cross what today is Hooker County, for many years the area was not as well suited as other counties in the Sandhills for farming or livestock grazing.
During that year the first election was held, county officers conducted their first meetings, taxes were levied, and bonds were sold in the amount of $1,521 for the construction of a courthouse and jail.
By 1920 Hooker County reached a peak population of 1,300 and three years later a larger brick courthouse was built.

Mullen, the only town in Hooker County, is strategically located 100 miles west of Broken Bow and 100 miles east of Alliance via Highway 2, or 70 miles south of Valentine and 70 miles north of North Platte on Highway 97.
In the first census, taken in 1890, Hooker County's population was 432.
Hooker County replaced the two-room frame courthouse in 1912 with a brick building that is presently serving its citizens.
