Hooker's fascination with wood, paint and quilts led her to develop an innovative approach to contemporary quiltmaking.
Hooker was one of 24 American artists selected to exhibit in the First International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Arad, Romania in 2005.
Hooker grew up in Abilene and Albany, but her travels have taken her to New York City and Washington, D.C. She moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1996 where she currently lives and works in her studio -- a converted barn.

Jim Potts is from the South West of England.
Jim is a big Sun Records fan, and the album was recorded at the Sun Studios in Memphis, so obviously I expected to hear a Sun sound.
Jim Potts does a pretty good interpretation, but of course Hooker's style is difficult to match.

Cray, who joins Hooker for a nice reading of "Baby Lee," always defers to his mentor, so it has more of a feeling of being a Hooker recording than many of the other tracks.
This album is a good addition for the listener who has everything else Hooker has recorded and wants to hear what Hooker has been doing in the '80s and '90s, or for the casual listener who might not appreciate the raw style on Hooker's straight blues.
But as a serious introduction to Hooker's body of work as a blues artist, "The Healer" cannot be recommended.
