Smith's family moved to Bethesda, Maryland when he was a child.
Smith entered politics and was elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1992, becoming president of that body in 1995.
Smith also achieved political distinction by being the first person to run for the Senate twice in one year.

 BlueOregon: Gordon Smith’s $1.9-Billion-a-Week Problem
In addition, Senator Smith wants to repeal the estate tax, which would cost $1 trillion in the decade after it takes effect when you include the $255 million of interest that will need to be paid to cover the cost of the increase in the nation’s debt because of the repeal.
Senator Smith’s spokesman waives off such concerns by claiming that tax cuts are good for the economy and that there's more revenue coming in now because the tax cuts have worked and brought the economy back.
It will be great day when Gordon Smith no longer suffers from his $1.9-billion-a-week problem and recognizes that he can’t help the poor and reduce the deficit by voting for tax cuts that primarily benefit the nation’s wealthiest households.

kazablog: Friday headliners: Smith, Wu, Hooley, Spitzer and junk food!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Our US Sen. Smith (R-Pendleton), whom some of us were lauding a few weeks back for his stand on Medicaid and opposition to drilling in the ANWR, didn't vote against the budget when it came down to it, even though he could have supported ANWR and Medicaid with a "nay".
No, seriously, this is the kind of issue that our Rep. Hooley loves, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her swoop in to help to stamp out the "evil influence".
Although the amendment passed, Smith voted against increased funding for up-armoured Hummers, even though there continues to be a shortage of them.

 BlueOregon: Call the SOB's
Darlene Hooley has been Congress's top attack-dog on the Administration's willingness to send our troops to Iraq without the body-armor they need to stay safe, and she has been a leading critic of the Administration's treatment of veterans.
Hooley has been able to win reelection over and over again because she is a moderate.
Finally, Hooley being in a Republican district is pretty irrelevant to the bankruptcy vote.

Hooley and Smith secured a total of $11 million in the bill for a group of transportation projects that will resolve long-standing traffic circulation and pedestrian access issues.

In other news yesterday, Congresswoman Hooley was given a "leave of absence" for undisclosed family concerns and our friends in Salem are halfway home to real progress on saving those same pesky geese that pollute our valley farms from having their throats mercilessly stuffed!
For the second time in two days, Hooley broke ranks with her Democratic colleagues in the House and helped make "bankruptcy reform" a bi-partisan resolution (the 302-126 vote, it should be noted, also benefitted from the support of that sometimes Democratic turncoat, Oregon's First District Congressman David Wu).
I have never understood why Rep. Hooley takes this position on the issue, and though it is a difficult one to get across in a campaign, we tried to make it clear: this is the oldest, most progressive tax we have.

It would figure, then, that Smith wouldn't be so forthcoming when asked if he still senses the necessary internal support at Michigan State upon starting his fourth season.

Despite the loss of Nels Stewart who signed with the Boston Bruins before the season the Maroons go on to finish in 2nd place with a respectable 23-19-6, as Lawrence Northcott, Hooley Smith and Paul Haynes finished in he top 5 in scoring.
