Hoonah means "village by the cliff." The Northwest Trading Co. built the first store in Hoonah in 1880.
In 1912, the Hoonah Packing Co. built a large cannery one mile north of town.

Two of the most promising mountains are Sonyakay Ridge and the Vortex, which are high limestone ridges that run from the northwest to the southeast and are separated by Freshwater Bay and the North Fork of Freshwater Creek.

Tongass National Forest, Alaska, June 15 - The Hoonah Ranger District recently approved the “Big Bear, Dry Stream and Low Ridge Environmental Assessment.” The small-scale timber project will involve the harvest of about 426 thousand board feet of timber from less than 100 acres on Chichagof Island.
After careful consideration of the EA, Baldwin determined that the project will not adversely impact wildlife or wildlife habitat and there will be no additional detrimental effects to the visual character of the area.
