Hoop Dreams is less about hoop than about dreams -- dreams nurtured, dreams annihilated.
Hoop Dreams makes the unsurprising point that the boys, who are both goof-offs in school, have been shaped into basketball machines -- incomplete people, who worship the game to the exclusion of almost everything else.
The metal hoops, so seductive and high, await the next generation of boys, ready to exalt or humble them.

Although it’s said that if you believe in a dream long enough it will come true, but in Hoop Dreams and A Raisin in the Sun you are shown the harsh realities of the falseness of that statement.
In Hoop Dreams, both William and Arthur are given much support to fulfill their dreams of getting to the NBA, but Walter in A Raisin in the Sun is only given grief on getting his liquor store.
All three of them had the same attitude towards the dreams, “No matter what this dream is going to come true.” The Worst part of it is that all of them let the dreams take over their lives.

 "Hoop Dreams" by Murray Sperber
The strength and power of HOOP DREAMS is not its sports story — that becomes too predictable and genre driven — but its representation of the players' families, particularly their mothers, Emma Gates and Sheila Agee.
The subtext is clear: for kids like William, the dream of sports stardom is so powerful and so tied to their self-definition that when the dream is in mortal danger — the doctors warn William that he might not regain full use of his knee — the individual begins to disintegrate along with the dream.
Thus, for all of its brilliant documentary sequences, HOOP DREAMS remains a Hollywood genre film about sports, focusing on the biographies of the stars, trying to catch us up in their adventures and triumphs, implying that their lives are typical stories, and never analyzing the political context in which these individuals exist.

Hoop Dreams considers the place of sports in society, and it reveals truths about a number of subjects relevant in modern-day America, including the roles of work, education, economic status, and family in creating the people that each of us becomes.
Hoop Dreams was released to theaters in 1994, and it was very well received because of Gene Siskel's and Roger Ebert's championing of it on their weekly TV show.
The Siskel and Ebert segments are especially interesting because of controversy surrounding Hoop Dreams and the Academy Awards, but the included booklet, which has essays on the film and a Washington Post article that updates us on Arthur's and William's lives now, surpasses the DVD extras.

Rather than providing viewers with a candy-coated confection of "local boy makes good," HOOP DREAMS illustrates how near impossible it is for such a story to even take place--and frequently as a result of things completely out of the boys' control.
The result is a searing portrait of inner city life in America, and the extraordinary, downright unfair expectations placed on the shoulders of many young fl athletes.
HOOP DREAMS painstakingly tempers the romanticism characteristic high school athletes by paying special attention to the many roadblocks that stand in the way of Gates' and Agee's dreams.
