  The Hooper Bay Alaska Kayak
Hooper Bay had a different dialect and slightly less complex ritual life than that of the Nunivak Island, but the kayak complex as a whole was generally similar for all coastal Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Eskimo.
When I first arrived in Hooper Bay in 1976, I was fortunate to find sixty-nine year old Dick Bunyan who was a skilled kayakmaker with over twenty kayaks and two umiaks (open skin boats) to his credit.
Hooper Bay was the last large Eskimo community in all North America to still use the kayak for traditional purposes.

HOOPER BAY, AK (August 4, 2006) - Hooper Bay Covenant Church has escaped damage from a sweeping fire that has devastated this small remote Alaskan village, destroying the elementary and high schools, one of the village’s two businesses, and more than a dozen homes, Covenant News Service has learned.
Hooper Bay Pastor Grant Funk and his family are reported to be safe, but could not be immediately reached for comment.
Firefighters from Hooper Bay and the neighboring villages of Chevak and Scammon Bay battled the blaze with hoses and pumps set up in ponds and the help of firefighting equipment, flown in from other parts of the state.

A lightship station was established at Hooper Strait as early as 1827.
Originally located off the northern entrance to Tangier Sound, between Bloodsworth Island and the eastern shore mainland in the Chesapeake Bay, the Hooper Strait Light was moved to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland in 1966.
The Hooper Strait lighthouse is called a "screwpile," because it was built on special iron pilings which were tipped with a screw that could be turned into the muddy bottom for a depth of 10 feet or more.
