Hoot review (2006) Jimmy Buffett - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Hoot is a throwback movie to the type of kids entertainment that I used to watch in my formative years, with a brand of humor and blithe sense of importance that one could find regularly on television known as the "After School Special".
Hoot isn't really trying to recapture a sense of nostalgia for these sorts of vacuous, sometimes-preachy little films, but it does appear to be made by people that haven't really matured past that era in terms of what they think of when they conceive of movies aimed at young adults.
Hoot is co-produced by easy listening rock/country star Jimmy Buffett, who also provides some new original songs to the soundtrack, in addition to casting himself in the role of the kindly biology teacher.

Walden Media returns with another movie based on a popular kids novel: Carl Hiaasen's "Hoot." While the movie doesn't quite manage to have the same appeal that "Holes" had or the visual power of "The Chronicles of Narnia," it's still a fairly entertaining movie with a good message.
The main character of "Hoot" is Roy Eberhardt (Logan Lerman), a kid from Montana who has just moved to Coconut Cove, Fla., (note to readers: Coconut Cove is not a real place.) He's been moving all his life and is getting tired of it fast.

Through 10 novels Hiaasen has pounded the gavel, his satire a verdict on the kinds of baddies we love to hate, in whose dismemberment we delight — those sleazy, avaricious salespeople and developers who prey upon fixed-income folks or the aw-shucks working poor.
Hiaasen's hell usually involves a worldly comeuppance, as is the fate here of Louis Piejack, would-be rapist and local moron, who manages to have his chopped-off fingers reattached out of order, and wrapped in a gargantuan bandage that ultimately becomes infested with fire ants.
But Hiaasen is always good for a number of laugh-aloud scenes and lines, and when he lets his men and women banter, his ear is pitch-perfect.

In Hoot, three middle-schoolers—a runaway, a tomboy and the “new kid”—join forces to foil greedy land developers, corrupt politicians, and comical cops in a story that is part mystery, part ecological statement and part drama about the trials of youth.
Thanks to the pedigree of Hiaasen’s sharp book and the loving transfer to screen by co-producers Jimmy Buffet and Frank Marshall (Seabiscuit) and Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Holes), Hoot blends just the right amount of spunk, heart and humor into its tight 90-minute package.
Hoot effectively portrays the trials that Roy faces because of his frequent moves from place to place, and the importance of having friends and understanding parents to carry him through.

HOOT was filmed in Florida at the 35-acre tropical estate of The Bonnet House Museum & Gardens in the Fort Lauderdale Area and on the Gulf Coast island of Boca Grande to capture the natural wonders reminiscent of Hiaasen’s own Florida childhood that he romanticizes in the book.
