Before this, the area around Hopetown was sparingly inhabited by nomadic Griquas, Trekboere (seasonal nomadic farmers), the last of the remaining Bushmen in the area, and a few hardy Pioneers.
Hopetown was a quiet farming area until 18658 when Schalk van Niekerk, a young farmer and stepson of Wiid, went to visit Daniel Jacobs on the farm, De Kalk (farm no. 37 on the map), some 20 miles North of Hopetown.

My own main family connection to Hopetown is through my G-G-grandfather, John Henry Abbott who arrived there in about 1854.
His Brother Thomas Abbott came at about the same time and was the Post Master of Hopetown until his untimely death in 1865.
His third son, Thomas married Annie Fincham and one of their direct descendants, who's surname isn't ABBOTT, is my last remaining direct relative in the Hopetown area propper, (farm Nauwtesfontein, no 78)

Founded on the farm Duvenaarsfontein on the banks of the Orange River, Hopetown is the historical site of the discovery of the first Vaal diamond, in 1866.
The servant was so impressed that she fashioned a crude replica out of tin and nailed it to the entrance of the farm on which Hopetown was later founded.
The diamond rush is long gone and today the town subsists on stock farming, wheat farming, and the cultivation of other crops grown under irrigation from the Orange River.
