Hopkins county is named for the family of David Hopkins, an early settler in the area.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older.

Hopkins County (C-20), in northeast Texas, is bordered on the north by the South Sulphur River.
Hopkins County has an area of 789 square miles, divided between Blackland Prairie in its northern half and southwestern quarter and the claypan of the post oak belt in its southeastern quarter.
Hopkins County was settled mainly by southerners; it had a population of 2,623 by 1850.

The District Courtroom is reminiscent of the one in the nearby Ellis County Courthouse.
That way each county ended up with what they wanted which was a grand courthouse like the one Gordon designed for their neighboring county, but with enough unique features and architectural details so that no one would ever dare call them identical.

Hopkins County was created 25 March 1846 by taking land from the south end of Lamar County and the north end of Nacogdoches County.
Today Hopkins County is bounded by Delta County on the north (the south fork of the Sulphur River being the dividing line), Franklin County on the east, Wood and Rains Counties on the south, and Hunt County on the west.
In the same county, Amanda E. COMBS married William RILEY 17 Oct 1872, and a M. (Mary or Martha?) COMBS married an A. HART 13 Sep 1874.

Sulphur Springs, the county seat of Hopkins County, is at the junction of Interstate 30 and State highways 11, 19, and 154, in the central portion of the county.
Davis deeded the public square to the county when the town was rechartered and became the county seat in 1870.
A courthouse was built on the east side of the public square in 1882 after Tarrant lost the position of county seat.

Sheep had to be put in pens surrounded by high picket fences every night, near by their owner's cabin, to save them from the wolves, and many of the settlers kept young calves under their cabin floors at night to protect them from wolves and panthers.
