Night riding was a form of vigilantism that erupted in Kentucky from 1905 to 1909, when chronically poor farmers resorted to violence in desperation over low tobacco prices combined with declining demand for the dark leaf.
Hopkinsville, named for General Samuel Hopkins who was another veteran of the Revolutionary War, eventually became the county seat.

According to a text from the Kentucky archives of the Mutual UFO Network, another interesting event took place in Knoxville, Kentucky, on August 22 1955, with description similar to the Kelly-Hopkinsville event, unfortunately I have not yet found the time to search for information on this other event.
The residents of southwestern Kentucky are people who even now are largely religious, and (I mean on disparagement) conformists.
