	Hopper car - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		A hopper car is a type of railroad freight car used to transport loose bulk commodities such as coal, ore, grain, track ballast, and the like.
		This type of car is distinguished from a gondola car in that it has opening doors on the underside or the sides to discharge its cargo.
		Recently in North America the open hopper car has been in a terminal decline due to the advent of the rotary car dumper (which simply inverts the car to unload it, and has become the preferred unloading technology).

		Covered hoppers are used to carry dry bulk commodities that must be protected from the weather, like grain, cement, fertilizer and a variety of granular or powdered chemicals.
		Typically some of the load would cake or "bridge" on the center sill, and the car would have to be vibrated to loosen the mess and achieve full unloading.
		Currently many cars from those manufacturers have trucks attached from inside the car, an odd situation that requires disassembling the car for maintenance or truck replacement.

	Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation #05-678 - UPGRADES TO PROVINCIAL HOPPER CAR FLEET ANNOUNCED - Government News Release
		The Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation (SGCC) is undertaking a $2 million refurbishment of its hopper car fleet and upgrade of the cars to a heavier weight carrying capacity.
		Work to be completed includes upgrading the carrying capacity of each hopper car from its current 90 tonnes to 100 tonnes and conducting repairs to ensure the fleet will meet its 50 year life span.

		Car #81532 was built by ACandF in Berwick PA, in Dec 1918, one of 1,750 cars in lot no. 412-H (80250-81999).

	40ft. Hopper Car
		The catalog lists an "Illinois Central" Hopper, but production runs I've seen are the post-1972 IC then known as "Illinois Central Gulf" thanks to the IC merger with the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio.
		Hopper most likely has its tool and die roots in the Athearn model.
		Pemco reportedly did some contract work for Tyco, so it is a good bet that the Tyco hopper is used as the basis for this model.

		More likely, if these are newer aluminum cars, the second hose is about the same size (at least at the connection) as the trainline, and is used to charge up the reservoirs for the pneumatic hopper gates.
		The air for pneumatic unloading of covered hopper cars (not grain cars--usually sugar, malt, flour, starch, plastics, etc.) generally comes from the unloading plant itself.
		I imagine when that area of the hopper is empty the door can be closed and the worker can move to the next area.

		The prototype series of hoppers had a larger capacity than the original Billmeyer and Smalls hoppers, which were rated at around 9 tons of coal, according to BandS literature.
		The newer cars had minimal external bracing, more closely akin to a gondola car than a hopper, which gave the car an extra foot's width.
		I don't know if this is true for all such cars, but the ones I got were significantly bowed inwards in the middle, to the tune of over 1/8" difference between the width at the ends vs. the middle.

		This was the third year the car was offered by TYCO and the first year that saw an expanded number of names available.
		There it is shown in only two names, 'Morton Salt' and 'Kellogg's.' The car remained a standard offering for TYCO for many years, available in many "billboard" names.
		I do not have an example of this car in my collection in the box to prove it, but I'd say it's a good guess that the 'Maxwell House' car is #358-E.

		I just checked the Firsthobby.com web site and Athearn is coming out with 3 New Hopper cars in Union Pacific Building America on them and also the "CMO" on them too.
		The way prices have shot up on cars lately,I wouldn't be surprised if the $80.99 was for a three pack.Are you sure this isn't the case?$80.99 PER CAR seems outrageous[:0][B)].
		If you do the math a 10 car train would cost 800 dollars if each car was 80.
