 DVD Talk Review: Hopscotch
Hopscotch isn't a terrible movie; in fact, someone out there must think it's an outstanding one, for it to have made it onto a Criterion edition.
The trouble with Hopscotch is that it's neither fish nor fowl: neither funny enough to be a comedy nor exciting enough to be a thriller.
For the curious, there's an option to play the film with the television broadcast soundtrack, in which "foul language" was edited for family viewing.

 MovieMartyr.com - Hopscotch
There are several films in their collection by directors that are less well known (The Blob, The Vanishing), and there might be a few movies that are worse (The Rock springs to mind), but out of the 150 or so films that they’ve selected to this point, this is clearly their least interesting choice.
In Hopscotch’s early scenes, we’re introduced to Kendig (Matthau), an amicable CIA agent who doesn’t use a gun and is on friendly terms with enemy agents.
The film is presumably meant to be playful, since it follows him as he extracts his bloodless revenge on those who have supposedly wronged him, but since Matthau never manages to exude much charm, it feels less playful than inconsequential.

 Mini Reviews (April 2004)
Both sequels of the film have essentially worked as remakes, with slight variations on the story (this time around, it's a girl pledging to join the elite organization).
The majority of the film is mind-numbingly repetitive: Matthau taunts Beatty, Beatty pursues, and Matthau escapes.
Even the fight sequences, supposedly the highlight of a Seagal film, fail to impress; Seagal's expanding size requires him to use a stunt man during such moments, and the switch from Seagal to stunt guy couldn't possibly be more obvious (perhaps hiring a thin double wasn't the smartest idea).

 dOc DVD Review: Hopscotch (1980)
Hopscotch is a leisurely paced caper, a lighthearted lark sans action set pieces and with no violence to speak of (no one even gets hurt, let alone killed).
Hopscotch isn't a great movie, and there isn't much heft to the storyline, but it entertains all the way through and provides an excuse to watch Matthau play the game like no one else can.
Hopscotch is a rather low-key comedic thriller, but it's great fun, and provides Walter Matthau with one of the best roles of his career.

It's also a film firmly set during the Cold War, but with its emphasis on the covert operatives that still exist today, in the 20-plus years since its theatrical release, it has dated very little.
Based on Garfield's novel of the same name, Hopscotch is as paranoid as the much darker The Parallax View, but director Neame keeps the atmosphere as light and breezy as the child's game that lends the movie its title.
The current DVD version of Hopscotch is part of the Criterion Collection, so it should be no surprise that the high-definition digital transfer is generally beautiful.

 The Criterion Collection: Hopscotch
The most surprising aspect of Hopscotch, however, may not be how well it walks that tightrope, but that its makers accomplished this balancing act in an era that saw the spy movie genre reduced to tales of relentless despair.
Nor was Hopscotch a simplistic anti-establishment movie—a close look at the plot reveals it as not so much against the concept of the CIA as against what the CIA was perceived as having become, in the hands of bureaucrats like Myerson (Ned Beatty).
Hopscotch gave Matthau the chance to portray the hero, a highly unorthodox but gifted counterintelligence agent—in effect, the Cary Grant role—and he proved as funny and charming in that role as Grant had in his.

Hopscotch is a movie your mother will love, a lightweight spy film more in tune with The Rockford Files than XXX.
Hopscotch supposes that the world's greatest spy is an ordinary but very smart guy who can predict his opponents' reactions and act accordingly, and thus slip through every net employed to catch him.
Hopscotch is a refreshing change in the filmography of writer Bryan Forbes, in that it's so light-hearted - a look at Forbes' filmography shows him acting in minor roles in serious movies, writing even more sober ones, and directing some of the least humorous films of all time.

According to Evans, even the rituals of the Cretan labyrinth can be seen to linger in modern practice, especially in one of the spiraled variations of the hopscotch diagram.
Interestingly, the topology of these primaries can be adopted easily to many popular culture applications, such as the urban courtyard of Hitchcock's Rear Window, where the theme of hopscotch returns as a strategy and structuring motif aided by the "acousmatic" role of background music and noise.

Nineteen years after the first Sundance Film Festival rose from the ashes of the tiny US Film Festival based in Salt Lake City, Robert Redford's little shindig in the Utah mountains has turned into the grand carnival of American independent film (whatever that means nowadays).
There are more foreign films on hand this year than ever before, and despite premieres of such mainstream studio fare as "The Butterfly Effect" -- featuring Ashton Kutcher playing hopscotch with his past -- Sundance continues to be mostly about the singular vision of the lone filmmaker.
Similarly, the 32 films entered in this year's dramatic and documentary competitions are overwhelmingly the work of first-timers, fueled by little more than passion, talent, credit cards, and luck.
